Loleatta Holloway
Loleatta Holloway (born November 5, 1946 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 21, 2011 ) was an American disco , soul and house singer.
Career
Loleatta Holloway began singing in a gospel choir as a child . She recorded her first records in the 1960s. In the early 1970s she finally starred in the musical Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope . In those days she also met her future husband and manager Floyd Smith (1917-1982). Her first solo recordings were still heavily influenced by the soul of the time. In 1975 she had her first top 10 success in the American R&B charts with Cry to Me .
In 1976 she signed with the Gold Mind label (distributed by Salsoul ) and switched to the disco genre. With her "warm, throaty voice" (Taurus-Press-Verlag) she achieved a number of successes: Dreamin (1976), Hit and Run (1977), Run Away (1977, with the Salsoul Orchestra ), Catch Me on the Rebound (1978 ) or That's What You Said (1979). Also in 1979 Dan Hartman chose her as a guest singer for his disco classic Relight My Fire . He also took on the production of Holloway's last studio LP, Love Sensation (1980), the title track of which was also successful and was later sampled countlessly. The ballads Worn Out Broken Heart (1977) and Only You (1978, with Bunny Sigler), also registered in the charts, underscored her talent as a soul interpreter.
After the end of the disco wave, Holloway recorded several singles for independent labels, including several remixes of their old successes. Every now and then she landed in the dance charts. Her recordings have been sampled countlessly - a well-known example is Black Box's Ride on Time from 1989 (UK No. 1). In 1991 the worldwide hit Good Vibrations by Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch (USA No. 1) followed, which however featured Holloway. Love Sensation served as a template for both recordings . In 1999 she released a cover version of the Prince song I Wanna Be Your Lover (1979) from his album Prince . In 2009, We're Getting Stronger from 1975 was sampled for Whitney Houston's comeback single Million Dollar Bill .
Holloway died of heart failure after a brief illness.
Private
Loleatta Holloway was the mother of four children and a grandmother of nine.
