Jane's Addiction is an American rock band . It originated in West Hollywood in the mid-1980s and had a major impact on alternative music . The band is considered a pioneer of grunge in alternative circles . Her best known songs include Jane Says , Been Caught Stealing and Mountain Song .

Musically, the musicians referred to the hard rock of the 1970s and 1980s, but also to funk and often used world music substitutes, which is why they are also considered to be forerunners to crossover . In particular, the musical relationship with Led Zeppelin is unmistakable. They combined this type of music with semi-religious sacred symbolism.

On the record covers, song texts and also at the concerts, Jane's Addiction provoked with sexual representations, which is why some of her covers were censored. The albums are still available today in a censored and an uncensored version.

history

The band emerged in 1985 from the line-up change of Perry Farrell's first band Psi Com. He was initially looking for a new bass player, after which he met Eric Avery . Psi Com broke up before the band performed with Avery. Soon Avery's sister introduced the two to drummer Stephen Perkins, who in turn brought in a guitarist, Dave Navarro. Navarro was a former bandmate of Perkins'. He suggested the name Jane's Addiction, alluding to one of Farrell's roommates. Two years later the band released the live album Jane’s Addiction , which was followed in 1988 by Nothing’s Shocking .

After the release of the third album Ritual de lo habitual , the band decided to break up and started a farewell tour in 1991, on which some befriended bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Living Color performed. The Lollapalooza hiking festivals developed from this tour .

Singer Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins soon started the Porno for Pyros project , but the success of this project could not match Jane's Addiction. The other band members were henceforth comparatively unsuccessful. Guitarist Dave Navarro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers for five years in 1993 . The resulting album, One Hot Minute, sold rather poorly. Dave Navarro eventually left the band as previous guitarist John Frusciante rejoined the band.

In 1997 the band gathered for a few live performances with Michael "Flea" Balzary of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass and released an album of unreleased studio and live recordings. A short time later, the individual members devoted themselves to other things.

It was not until 2001 that the band reunited and brought out an album with Chris Chaney as the new bass player, which also included a world tour. In late June 2004, Jane's Addiction separated again. Three of the four remaining band members (all except Perry Farrell) then formed the band The Panic Channel together with Steve Isaacs. According to the band, reasons for the separation are "not worth mentioning" . Dave Navarro also plays in the cover / jam band Camp Freddy with several other well-known musicians. In turn, Perry Farrell founded the band Satellite Party.

The song Superhero from the album Strays became the theme song for the US television series Entourage .

In 2008 the band found again in the original line-up with Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins.

2010 Eric Avery left the band again. The replacement was bassist Duff McKagan , who became world famous in the late 1980s and early 1990s through the rock band Guns N 'Roses . In the meantime McKagan left the band. Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio joined as bassist, but he is not part of the band.
