Jane Says is the title of a song by the American alternative rock band Jane's Addiction . It was first released with the debut and live album Jane's Addiction in 1987. For the studio album Nothing's Shocking , released in 1988 , the band recorded the song again, this version was much more successful and is generally better known than the original. In 1988 it was placed 25th in the newly introduced chart listing with alternative songs by Billboard magazine and stayed there for a total of 18 weeks.
It was written between 1985 and 1986 by band members Farrell and Avery.

The song is about a woman by the name of Jane who leads a completely out of control life and suffers from various problems, such as heartache and drug addiction. Singer Perry Farrell confirmed that there was a Jane living in his earlier environment when the band was founded in the 80s. She suffered from severe addiction problems and was also together with the dealer Sergio, who is also mentioned in the text as a lover.
"Around 1984, I rented a big house on Wilton, near Hancock Park, [...] and one of my housemates was Jane, this strangely beautiful, well-to-do girl who got caught up in the drug scene and fell in love with a dealer named Sergio. "
In Los Angeles Jane Bainter living could overcome their drug addiction later.
Music video
For the album Kettle Whistle , a live performance by Jane Says was filmed and released as the official music video for the song in 1997, while the audio comes from a concert in July 1991. Instead of Farrell, the video shows the musician Flea on bass.
