Have you ever? is a ballad that songwriter Diane Warren wrote for contemporary R&B singer Brandy . The song was released in late 1998 and early 1999, respectively. The ballad reached number one on the New Zealand and US singles charts.
background
The title was produced by David Foster . For the singer from the black music scene, working with the pop producer was a new experience. In a 2005 interview, Brandy said about the studio recordings of the song:
“That was the first time I had been in the studio with a producer like David Foster, [...] My voice wasn't as developed as it is now and the song required what producers call 'money notes' - the kind that get you a No. 1 on the charts! I was really nervous but it all worked just fine ”
“That was the first time that I was in the studio with a producer like David Foster [...] My voice wasn't as developed as it is today, and the song still lacked what producers called it, "Geldton", one that gets you number one in the charts! I was very nervous, but [in the end] everything went very well ”
The song was released on the second studio album Never Say Never ; the single is the third international and the second US release from the album.
Music video
In the video, Brandy is in her boyfriend's empty apartment while she is watching old video recordings of their time together. It is the first video in which Brandy does not wear braids , which were a kind of trademark until then. This is how she can be seen with an afro or straightened hair. The video was directed by Kevin Bray. Successful director Kevin Bray, who also worked with Christina Aguilera , Whitney Houston , Jennifer Lopez and Lauryn Hill , directed the video.
Commercial win
Brandys Have You Ever? was successfully represented in the charts; in the US Billboard Hot 100 and in New Zealand , the song was after The Boy Is Mine Brandy's second number one hit in a row. Internationally, the song also reached the top twenty in the United Kingdom , Canada and Australia and the top thirty in Holland and Ireland . Although the song was a number one hit in several countries , it was not successful in other countries such as France , Germany , Sweden , Switzerland or Austria . In these markets the title only achieved a placement below the top 50 and even missed entry in the latter two countries.
Have you ever? has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide to date and was awarded platinum in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
