Roche produced the song , which was released in April 1999 as the fourth single from Brandy's studio album Never Say Never , in early 1998. The piece was also included in the soundtrack for the Diana Ross television film Double Platinum! contain. In September 1999, a remix produced by DJ Premier was released on the Extended Play U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To) - The Remix EP .

In the United States, the song was initially a top forty hit in April, until it climbed to 16th place on the Billboard Hot 100 in June . In Germany the piece reached number 88. The song stayed in the German charts for eight weeks.

The mid-tempo song was picked up several times by other artists, including country singer Mark Wills on the album Permanently . In 2007 the producer Jermaine Dupri sampled the song under the title Almost Made Ya , interpreted by the rapper duo Ali & Gipp featuring LeToya .
