The Best of Brandy is the first best-of compilation by R&B singer Brandy . It was released in 2005. It is her last and fifth album on the Atlantic label .

background

After the album Afrodisiac, contrary to the expectations of the record company Atlantic , proved to be a flop for the label despite a gold record for over 500,000 units sold, the singer and the company consequently did not renew the contract. Nevertheless, a publication in the terms of the contract remained open. The album therefore only served to fulfill their contract. The label released the long player without any promotion by the singer herself and old pictures had to be used for the cover and booklet . In addition, the CD did not contain any new material recorded for the album.

content

The singer's first compilation includes material from over ten years of Brandy's music career, whose first single "I Wanna Be Down" was released in 1994. Almost all singles from the four studio albums Brandy , Never Say Never , Full Moon and Afrodisiac to date are included, as well as soundtracks from the films Waiting for Mr. Right and Set It Off . While there wasn't a new song per se, the album included a previously unreleased remix of their number one hit " The Boy Is Mine " and remixes of the singles "U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To)" with the rappers Da Brat and Shaunta, "Brokenhearted" with singer Wanyá Morris from Boyz II Men and "I Wanna Be Down" with rappers Queen Latifah , Yo Yo and MC Lyte as well as a cover version of the Michael Jackson classic Rock with You , originally appeared on Quincy Jones ' album Q's Jook Joint with rapper Heavy D in 1995 . Not included singles are smaller hits like "He Is", "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)" and "Never Say Never".

criticism

The album received generally good reviews, but was always denounced for the lack of new material. One was also bothered by the imbalance between the singles from the 1990s albums Brandy and Never Say Never , ten tracks in number, and those from the 2000s albums Full Moon and Afrodisiac , only four tracks. Andy Kellman of the All Music Guide wrote that "the compilation, unlike that of so many of its colleagues, shows little evidence of dwindling creativity and popularity." Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine called the album as "a must-have for hardcore Moesha - Fans " Thomas Inskeep from Stylus Magazine gave the album its nostalgic effect benefit. Each song reminds you of an event from that time.
