Jessica Mauboy (2014)

Jessica Hilda Mauboy (* 4. August 1989 in Darwin ) is an Australian R & B - singer and actress who as a finalist of the fourth season of Australian Idol became known in 2006: She took 2nd place behind Damien Leith . She is a member of the Australian girl group Young Divas.

After Australian Idol , she has released two solo albums that have been awarded gold and platinum respectively in Australia . Her singles were also very successful in Australia, including the number one hit Burn from 2009. For her breakthrough and success she was awarded a total of two ARIA Awards , the most important national music prize. In 2012 she played one of the leading roles in the musical adaptation of The Sapphires .

Jessica's father comes from the Indonesian West Timor ( Teunbaun , Westamarasi ), her mother comes from the Australian aborigines.

2006: Australian Idol

In 2006, Mauboy applied for the fourth season of Australian Idol in Alice Springs . Her performance with the song I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston liked the jury and the fans so much that she became a crowd favorite and easily made it to the semifinals. During the season Mauboy sang a variety of pop and R&B songs such as Crazy in Love , Butterfly and When You Believe .

On November 27, 2006 Mauboy sang with the second finalist Damien Leith in the finals at the Sydney Opera House . In the end, Jessica lost the final against Leith and came second.

Music and acting career

2006–2008: The Journey and New Attitude with the Young Divas

On December 10, 2006, two weeks after the Australian Idol finale , Mauboy signed a recording deal with Sony BMG . Sony BMG's Denis Handlin announced that Mauboy's debut album will be released in mid-2007. On December 24, 2006, Mauboy sang When a Child Is Born and Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You at the Carols by Candlelight event in Melbourne . On February 24, 2007, Mauboy released her debut album The Journey , a live album with her idol performances, in Australia. The album debuted at number four on the Australian album charts and was awarded gold for over 35,000 copies sold. On March 1, 2007, Mauboy had an appearance on the Channel Seven show Sunrise . She sang Beautiful . She recorded the song Right Up Higher , which is the intro of The Catch-Up show . In April 2007, Mauboy was featured in an advertisement for Head & Shoulders .

On September 26, 2007, after much speculation, Mauboy became a member of the girl group Young Divas. Mauboy joined the group for Ricki-Lee Coulter. The group's debut album was released in June 2007. The first Young Divas single Turn Me Loose was released on November 17, 2007 and debuted at number 21 on the Australian charts, later the single reached number 15. The group's second studio album (and the first with Mauboy) New Attitude was a week later released on November 24th and debuted at number 10. The album later went gold, becoming Mauboy's second gold album. On 28 March 2008, the second single should Turn Me Loose of New Attitude is published, but it never came. In June 2008 Mauboy sang the songs Crazy in Love and Sempurna with Indonesian Idol . On August 24, 2008 Mauboy left the girl group Young Divas after only one year to concentrate on her solo career.

2008–2009: Been Waiting

In the summer of 2008 Mauboy began work on her first studio album, Been Waiting . Mauboy's debut solo single Running Back was released on September 23, 2008 in Australia and peaked at number 3 on the charts. The single was awarded double platinum for over 140,000 copies sold. Her debut album Been Waiting was released on November 22, 2008 and reached number 11 on the album charts. The album went platinum.

Mauboy's second single Burn was released on December 6, 2008 and debuted at number 30, after 7 weeks the song reached number 1 on the ARIA charts and became Mauboy's first number one hit in Australia. The single reached platinum status after a while and was in the Australian top ten for over 20 weeks. Her next four singles reached all top positions in the Australian charts, Let Me Be Me was awarded gold.

Together with the American rapper Flo Rida , Jessica performed as the opening act on the Australian part of Beyoncé's I Am… Tour from September 15 to 24, 2009 .

On October 8, 2009, Jessica was nominated for seven categories at the ARIA Awards: Highest Selling Single ( Burn & Running Back ), Highest Selling Album, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist Single ( Running Back ), Breakthrough Artist Album & Best Female Artist. Mauboy sang Burn at the ARIA Awards on November 26, 2009, she could only win the award for the category Highest Selling Single for Running Back .

2010–2012: Films and Get 'Em Girls

In early 2010, Mauboy played the main role in the film - musical Bran Nue Dae . Directed by Rachel Perkins, Mauboy starred alongside other stars such as Ernie Dingo, Geoffrey Rush , Missy Higgins and Deborah Mailman. The film was released in Australian theaters on January 14, 2010.

From March 2010 Mauboy worked on her second studio album Get 'Em Girls , which was released on November 5, 2010 in Australia. Mauboy wrote songs and recorded them in the US with Iyaz and Jay Sean . The album's title track reached number 19 on the charts and was heavily criticized. The single received no award. With her second single from the album, Saturday Night with US rapper and singer Ludacris, Mauboy landed a smash hit. The song debuted at its highest position at number 7 on the Australian singles chart and was awarded double platinum for over 140,000 copies sold. The album Get 'Em Girls debuted at number 6 and became their second top ten album. It was awarded gold.

On August 12, 2011 the Deluxe Edition of the album was released. It includes five new songs and remixes of the hit singles Saturday Night , What Happened to Us and Inescapable . On August 22, 2011, the album entered the album charts at number 9 and again spent a few weeks in the top 50 of the charts. On October 28, 2011, she released the album's fifth single, Galaxy, featuring Australian pop singer Stan Walker . The song peaked at number 13 and was awarded platinum.

In 2012 Mauboy played the role of Julie McCrae in the Australian musical film The Sapphires , which is based on the Australian musical of the same name from 2004. Directed by Wayne Blair , Mauboy starred alongside other stars such as Deborah Mailman , Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell. Mauboy recorded 15 songs for the soundtrack to the film, which reached # 1 and went platinum. The first single from the album Gotcha reached number 43 and was awarded gold.

2013 – today: Beautiful and Eurovision

In February 2013 it was announced that Mauboy's version of Etta James ' Something's Got a Hold on Me would be used as the theme song for the 2013 National Rugby League season. The song was released as a single on February 27th and reached number 26 on the ARIA charts.

Mauboy's third studio album, Beautiful , was released on October 4th and debuted at number 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It became their highest-ranked album to date. The first single To the End of the Earth was released on July 17th, reached number 21 on the ARIA charts and was awarded gold. On September 27th the second single from the album Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up) was released. She debuted at number 2 and went platinum. In the New Zealand charts the song debuted at number 33 and thus led to its second international success. The album's title track, Beautiful , was released as the third single and reached number 46 on the ARIA charts.

During the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 she was allowed to sing her single Sea of ​​Flags , but not as a participant, but as an interval act. This makes her the first solo artist outside of Europe to appear as a guest at the competition.

She represented her home country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 after this was announced on December 11, 2017. With the song We Got Love she reached the 20th place in the final.

Influences

According to her family, Mauboy lists Michael Jackson , Lady Gaga , Beyoncé Knowles , Christina Aguilera , Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey as her musical influences and role models, her favorite songs being My All , Anytime You Need s Friend , Poker Face , Butterfly and Hero . Mauboy has already experimented with many musical styles and also discovered country for himself, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline are Jessica's country models.

On October 8, 2009, Mauboy was nominated for seven categories at the ARIA Awards : Highest Selling Single ( Burn & Running Back ), Highest Selling Album, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist Single ( Running Back ), Breakthrough Artist Album & Best Female Artist. Mauboy sang Burn at the ARIA Awards on November 26, 2009, she could only win the award for the category Highest Selling Single for Running Back .

At the ARIA Awards 2011 Mauboy was nominated for Highest Selling Single ( Saturday Night ) and Most Popular Australian Artist.

At the ARIA Awards 2012 Mauboy was nominated for Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release ( Gotcha ) and Song of the Year ( Galaxy ).

At the ARIA Awards 2013, Mauboy was named best female artist of the year.
