Jessica Alyssa Cerro (born August 14, 1995 ) is an Australian singer who performs under the stage name Montaigne . She should have represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam , which was canceled in March 2020 . Instead, she will represent her home country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 .

Life

Cerro is the daughter of soccer player Gus Cerro , who played in Malaysia and in the National Soccer League in Australia. She grew up with her parents and a younger sister in the north-west of Sydney and claims her origins as a mix of Argentinian , Spanish , Filipino and French . She also played soccer in her youth and wanted to get a soccer scholarship to college in the United States . Her first publication came about when she and her father wanted to add music to a football video. Your stage name Montaigne is a reference to the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne .

Cerro took part in 2012 with the song Anyone But Me in the newcomer competition Triple J Unearthed of the Australian radio station Triple J , where she could reach the final. In 2014 she released her first single, I Am Not an End. In February 2016 she released the single 1955 together with the band Hilltop Hoods , which reached number two on the Australian charts. In August 2016 she released her debut album Glorious Heights , which entered the Australian album charts at number four. At the ARIA Awards 2016 she was nominated in five categories. Cerro was able to win in the Breakthrough Artist category. In 2019 she released her second album Complex .

In 2020, Cerro came with the song Do not Break Me at Euro Vision 2020: Australia Decides , the Australian qualifying round for the Euro Vision Song Contest on. There she was able to prevail against nine other entries in the final and should now have represented her country at the music event in Rotterdam. The competition was canceled on March 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . On April 2, 2020, the Australian television station Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) announced that Cerro would compete in 2021 instead.

Cerro is more expressive of political and social issues on social media, in her songs, and in interviews. At the ARIA Awards in 2016, she showed the words “people over profit” (German: “people over profit”) on her skin. In a similar action, she protested two years later against the Adani Group and its Carmichael coal mine . She supports the climate strike movement and is vegan. In interviews, she stated that she was bisexual .
