Head & Shoulders

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Head & Shoulders (also Head'n Shoulders) is one of Procter & Gamble held brand under which the company in particular shampoo against dandruff markets.

history

Procter & Gamble researchers decided in 1950 to develop a new anti-dandruff shampoo because the products available at the time did not help against scalp problems. For almost a decade a new substance was sought and the active ingredient zinc pyrithione was finally selected. Products under the Head & Shoulders brand name were first introduced to the US market in 1961.

The name refers to the English idiom to be head and shoulders above somebody "to be superior to someone as high as a tower" (e.g. Head and shoulders, he's the best guitar player I know. ).

Products

Unlike other shampoos, there were relatively few variations by Head & Shoulders until the late 1990s. Today there are over ten different types of this shampoo that are said to be suitable for different hair types. There is a separate section for men and women, but the one for women was only introduced in 2019 under the name “Suprême”.

Active ingredient

A study carried out by the Medical Center of the University of Liège showed that the active ingredient zinc pyrithione is somewhat less effective than the active ingredient ketoconazole in some competing products in the treatment of dandruff.
