... Baby One More Time ( English for: ... Baby One More Time ") is a song by American pop - singer Britney Spears from her eponymous debut album . The piece was written by Max Martin .

The track was released on October 13, 1998 by Jive Records as a single in the United States and in the spring of 1999 worldwide. The song, the lyrics and Spears itself attracted attention and discussed in the mass media . The play was a worldwide success and the breakthrough for Spears. The singer was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Female Vocal Performance" with her most successful single to date .

Background and content

After Spears signed a record deal with Jive Records, she flew to Sweden in the spring of 1998 to work with Martin, Denniz PoP , Rami and other producers. Martin originally wrote the track Hit Me Baby One More Time for TLC, but the song was not recorded with the American pop trio because TLC had already finished work on their third studio album, FanMail . Martin then offered the song to Spears and her management. Spears later stated that she knew this song was going to be a hit. After the recording, Spears said, “I didn't feel comfortable in the studio on the first day, I was just too nervous. So I went outside and had fun. The next day everything was much better and I felt good and thought, now I'll take on ... Baby One More Time . ”The original opening words“ Hit Me ”were deleted before the release and replaced by the ellipse . Thus the song title "... Baby One More Time" was created.

In terms of content, the song is about a fading love. Spears said, “It's a song any girl can relate to. She wants her boyfriend back. ”The song has a high recognition value due to the beginning“ Oh baby baby ” . Spears also used this stylistic device for other of her recordings, for example Oops! … I Did It Again and If U Seek Amy . The text was controversial in the United States , mainly because of the words "hit me baby one more time," whose sadomasochistic connotation has been speculated.

criticism

Amanda Murray of Sputnikmusic called the track “undoubtedly the highlight of this album. It's well composed, tightly arranged, and even with Spears' vocal limitations, it's right for the proverbial pop throat. For Murray the song was a highlight for pop music. Baby One More Time will be seen as a milestone in pop music in general for a long time, and that it is a strong contender for the prototype of the pop resurrection in the late 90s." Beth Entertainment Weekly's Johnson called it "Candy Pop with a Funk Style." Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic thought the song was "awesome", Barry Walters compared the song on Rolling Stone with previous hits by Samantha Fox and wrote that the song effectively transformed "this ex-mouse keteer from a small town in Louisiana into a lolita-like purring dynamo" have. Blender's Brian Raftery called ... Baby One More Time a “perfect, cleverly crafted pop tune. […] At the time, Teenpop was still a boys' event, but while the boys were still buzzing over swarms , Spears was already planning the overnight break ”.

Music video

The music video was shot on August 7th and 8th, 1998 in Los Angeles ; the Director led Nigel Dick. He was criticized by colleagues for his collaboration with Spears after the video was finished. He said: “It's a great song. I don't know about Britney. I never went to the Mickey Mouse Club . She looks like a nice kid and she is very enthusiastic, but I just love the song. It's just a great song ”.

The video turned out completely different than it was originally planned. It was supposed to be filmed in a cartoon style to appeal to more younger viewers. However, Spears was unhappy about it. She said she wanted a video that reflected the lives of the fans and that the content of the video should be set in a school . Spears explained her idea to Dick and that she wanted a video with a dance routine.

Dick's original idea for Spears' outfit was based on jeans and a t-shirt , but Spears opted for a school uniform . Dick said that “All of the clothes in the video are from Kmart , and I said I didn't want any clothes in the video that are more than $ 17 . It's much more real like that. ”Spears said,“ The outfits looked too childish so I thought, 'Take off your shirt and be cool' ”. Speaking of the first music video experience, Spears said, “It was a wonderful experience. All these people there who work with you and only want the best for you. I had my own trailer. It was a wonderful experience ”. The music video was recorded at Venice High School , the same school that was used for the film Grease .

The video begins with a bored Spears in a class at a Catholic school. Her assistant Felicia Culotta played the role of Spears' teacher . As the bell rings, Spears walks out of the classroom into the school hall and begins her dance choreography. After that, Spears is outside in sportswear . Spears does gymnastics with other students before she goes back to school. Then she sits in the gymnasium grandstand and watches a basketball game . Their crush sits in the stands next to Spears, played by Spears' cousin Chad. After this short segment, Spears begins her final dance scene and the video ends with a daydream  - Spears is back in her class.

influence

The music video for … Baby One More Time helped Spears become a superstar.

In 1999, Spears received her first MTV Video Music Award nominations for Best Pop Video, Best New Artist, and Best Female Video for her music video for ... Baby One More Time . In a list compiled by VH1 in 2001 , the music video was ranked number 9 of the best music videos of all time. The video was the first of 14 others on MTV's TRL series . On MTV Latin America, the video was ranked # 7 of the Most Viewed MTV Videos and # 3 in the Top 100 Pop Videos behind Madonna's Like a Virgin and Michael Jackson's Billie Jean .

Wesley Yang compared the music video to Britny Fox 's Girlschool music video because it “is also in a Catholic school. [...] But that was the hottest video by a terrible hair metal band. Britney Spears was an important point in today's culture. "

The music video was recreated in Spears' 2009 single If U Seek Amy . After she comes outside, however, she wears a dress and her daughter wears a school uniform.
