Fountains of Wayne was an American indie - rock band who in 1995 founded and was disbanded, 2013.

history

Adam Schlesinger

The band was founded by Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood. The two met in college and soon played together in changing bands. In the meantime, they went their separate ways, but met again in the mid-1990s and founded Fountains of Wayne. A demo tape eventually brought them a contract with Atlantic Records . In 1996 they released their debut album, also called Fountains of Wayne . Two singles, Radiation Vibe and Sink to the Bottom , became relatively successful radio hits. But first the title track That Thing You Do! of the film of the same name brought the breakthrough: Schlesinger's song was honored with an Oscar nomination and a gold certificate from the RIAA .

Together with guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young, the two went on world tours, often as a backing band for artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins , The Lemonheads and others.

After the debut album had sold about 125,000 copies, a new album was released in 1999 called Utopia Parkway , named after a street on Long Island , New York . The album went towards a concept album and was about life in today's suburban neighborhoods. The album received favorable reviews. However, like its predecessor, it sold rather slowly, and the singles did not become a hit either. The band went on an extensive tour again, but the resentment between them and the label increased when the management did not understand how to successfully promote the single Troubled Times . Atlantic canceled the contract at the end of 1999.

The band broke up for the time being, their future seemed uncertain. Schlesinger found work as a songwriter and producer and wrote many of the songs in the film Josie and the Pussycats . He has also produced albums for Verve Pipe , David Meade and They Might Be Giants .

From 2001 the band slowly got back together. Recordings for a cover of the Kinks song Better Things for the tribute album This Is Where I Belong: Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks and other projects eventually brought in enough money to record a new album.

In 2003 the band signed with S-Curve Records , a subsidiary of Virgin Records , and released the album Welcome Interstate Managers . The album was a surprise hit and sold reasonably well. The released single Stacy's Mom got the gold certificate of the RIAA . The following single Mexican Wine fared less well because of a controversial video - the refrain ... think i'll have another glass of Mexican Wine was sung by children -. The third single, Hey Julie , brought back some airplay .

In June 2005, Fountains of Wayne released a collection on the album Out-of-State Plates with all B-sides previously published , previously unreleased songs and the two new pieces The Girl I Can't Forget and Maureen . The latter was also released as a promotional single, so it could be heard on American radio but not for sale.

Tell Me What You Already Did, from the soundtrack to the film Robots , even made it onto the list of 42 eligible songs for an Oscar nomination in 2006 . However, there was no nomination.

On April 3, 2007, the fifth album Traffic and Weather was released . In 2009 Fountains of Wayne gave some concerts during which they played new songs from their next album. According to band member Chris Collingwood, the album was already finished, but since the band had no record deal, the work was initially unreleased. It wasn't until 2011 that the album was released with the title Sky Full of Holes .

In 2013, Fountains of Wayne went their separate ways. The difficult work on the band's last studio album was cited several times in interviews as the reason for the separation. This was mainly attributed to Collingwood's personal problems and his alcohol addiction, for which he had already given himself treatment years earlier, and differences with band colleague Adam Schlesinger.

Band name

The band's name was taken from a garden fountain hardware store in Wayne , New Jersey , not far from Montclair , the hometown of bassist and co-founder of the band, Adam Schlesinger. An episode of the television series The Sopranos was filmed in this hardware store , which led the fans of the band to worship this hardware store.
