Circus (. English for " circus ") is a song by American pop - singer Britney Spears from her sixth studio album Circus that of Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco was produced.

background

On October 31, 2008, Circus was announced as the second single from the album of the same name on Spears' official website. The song was written and produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. He is classified in the R&B and electro-pop area. Furthermore, the song received positive reviews in advance.

After its predecessor Womanizer reached number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 , the single Circus was the first Spears single to debut at number 3 and thus in the top 5 of the US Billboard 100 through 212,000 digital copies. In the meantime, over 2.5 million copies of the single have been sold in the USA, which means 2 times platinum and 1 time gold, or 2.5 times platinum. Circus was able to seamlessly build on the success of the previous single and is even Spears' second most successful single in the USA, right after Womanizer .

In addition, the single was able to place itself at number 2 in the Canadian and at number 6 in the Australian single charts. In Sweden the single rose to number 8. In Germany the song just missed the top ten with number 11, in Austria (number 15) and Switzerland (number 19) Circus reached the top 20 and was therefore unable to reach the German-speaking countries to build on the success of Womanizer .

Circus was able to reach number 1 in the singles charts in Turkey , Israel , Singapore and Brazil , among others .

Circus was used as the theme song for the 4th season of Germany's Next Topmodel from February 12 to May 21, 2009.

Music video

In keeping with the title, the music video emphasized the circus theme. Spears manager Larry Rudolph confirmed that the director was Francis Lawrence, who already signed the clip for I'm a Slave 4 U (2001), but is also responsible for the hit movie I Am Legend starring Will Smith .

In the video, Spears shows himself with elephants and lions , among others ; Lawrence also worked a lot with spotlights that light up Spears, the dancers and extras in the clip. The video was shot from October 28th to November 2nd, 2008.

Reviews

The single received consistently positive reviews from Billboard . It is said: “With Circus , Spears placed himself in the hands of the gifted Dr. Luke ( Pink , Katy Perry ), who embeds them in an electronic cyber-pop landscape, while Spears spits out lines like “There's only two types of guys out there / Ones that can hang with me and ones that are scared”. You just have to love it. While her life often resembles a circus that is open to the public, it seems like Spears is now the ringleader rather than the main attraction. "

Live performances

Britney Spears sings Circus on her circus tour

Britney Spears sang Circus on December 2, 2008 on the American talk show Good Morning America with Womanizer . She wore a punk shirt, leather jeans, a small cloth vest and a top hat. Circus was also an integral part of Britney's “ The Circus Starring: Britney Spears ” tour (2009). Britney Circus always sang the first song at every concert . The costumes were very different and unusual and varied from concert to concert. The opening act of Circus always began with a video message in which Perez Hilton as Queen Elizabeth I greeted the audience and welcomed them to the circus. In the middle of the video message, a cylinder surrounds the screen, which gets bigger and bigger, then Britney Spears appears in the video and shoots Hilton with a crossbow. When the video ended, Spears came onto the stage with a platform from the ceiling, she wore a leopard wig with a headdress and a top hat, red circus clothes, little black leather pants, high heels and a whip as a ringmaster. Spears sang circus as a ringmaster every time. While Spears sang Circus , acrobats re-enacted a circus show on stage. At the end of the performance, Spears always took off her circus clothes and presented herself as a slave. Then Spears walked across the stage where smoke was rising to a gold cage and sang Piece of Me there . It is also part of their current Las Vegas show Britney: Piece of Me .
