Circus (English for: " Circus ") is the sixth studio album by the US singer Britney Spears . In North America it was released on December 2, 2008, the singer's 27th birthday, while in Europe and Australia it was released on November 28, 2008. It was recorded within 5 months, from April to September 2008.

Circus debuted at number 1 in the USA, Switzerland and Canada , became Spears' fifth number one album in America and made the top ten in 17 other countries. The album was awarded platinum eleven times and gold eleven times worldwide.

The first single, Womanizer , became an international hit and topped the charts in over twenty countries worldwide, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, where it became her second number 1 single. The second single, Circus , debuted at number three in the US, which was Spears' highest debut on the Hot 100 at the time. The single If U Seek Amy managed to reach the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and could not build on the success of its two predecessors. Several live performances and her first world tour in five years supported the promotion for the album.

Womanizer received a Grammy nomination for "Best Dance Recording," the first nomination in five years. At the Video Music Awards 2009 Womanizer was nominated for “Video of the Year” and “Best Pop Video” and was able to prevail in the “Best Pop Video” category. The second single, Circus , was nominated five times, but could not succeed in any category.

background

For the first time in May 2008 several well-known producers like Sean Garrett and JR Rothem confirmed that Spears had started work on a new album and was in the phase in which she was looking for the sound and musical direction she wanted to take. Spears manager, Larry Rudolph, announced in a press release in July 2008 that the singer would “spend her summer in the studio working on a new album [...] with a team of top producers and songwriters and that they are excited to see what they'll have done by then. ”In August 2008, Spears said in an interview with OK! also about her new album: “I think this time it's more into the contemporary R&B corner. I work with people who are just phenomenal. [...] There is this fresh new energy. At the moment I write every day, right here at the piano in my living room ... This will be my best work so far. "

Since most of the songs were illegally posted on the Internet months before the release of their predecessor Blackout , stricter security precautions were taken before the new album was released. So betrayed Shannon Holtzapffel , one of Spears' background dancers, opposite the Daily Telegraph : "When we were finished with the dance rehearsals, they took the CD and placed in a safe. I've never seen anything like it before. "

According to the music magazine Rolling Stone , Spears recorded about 30 songs for their sixth studio album.

Circus was officially announced by Jive Records on September 15, 2008 by means of a press release.

production

Spears worked with many different producers on her sixth studio album. Danja , who was already heavily involved in the previous Blackout and u. a. is responsible for the hit Gimme More , wrote and produced two songs for Circus . Also the Swedish production team Bloodshy & Avant , who had worked with the singer several times in the past (including Toxic & Showdown for In the Zone in 2003; My Prerogative & Do Somethin ' for Greatest Hits: My Prerogative in 2004; Piece of Me & Radar for Blackout in 2007), participated again in the new album. Guy Sigsworth , who most recently produced the ballads Everytime and Someday (I Will Understand) , written by Spears himself , was responsible for the quieter songs.

Max Martin , who is responsible for Spears' debut and biggest hit so far ... Baby One More Time from the album of the same name, wrote and produced his "best work ever" for Circus . Dr. Luke (who often collaborates with Martin) shows up a. jointly responsible for the title track Circus . The song was co-produced by Benny Blanco. Also noteworthy are The Outsyders, a previously unknown producer duo from Atlanta who produced Womanizer , the first single, and helped Spears to a # 1 hit in numerous countries, including the US and Canada.

Junkie XL , Lil Jon , Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins , Sean Garrett , Taio Cruz , JR Rothem and Lady Gaga worked on songs for Spears that didn't make it to the circus . Only Quicksand , written and co-produced by Lady Gaga, will be released as a bonus track on iTunes .

reception

The English tabloid The Sun received several audio samples from Circus exclusively at the beginning of November . It published the first review worldwide. The criticism was consistently positive, especially if U Seek Amy and Kill the Lights were enthusiastic. In addition, the album would have similarities to Madonna's Hard Candy .

According to Nick Levine , author at Digital Spy , Circus has similarities to Spears' last studio album, although the singer sounds more confident and just as natural on the new work, as her voice has hardly been digitally edited afterwards. In addition, Circus has something that Blackout does not have - with Out from Under a ballad that moves you to tears .

The album was voted "Album of the Year 2008" twice, in the annual poll of Billboard readers as well as Allheadlinenews.com readers. AHN writes : “[…] a # 1 album, which was produced by their former hit guarantors Max Martin and Guy Sigsworth, almost gives the impression that the world of Britney has never been in a crisis. With colorful pop beats and hardly a mention of their problems, Circus continues exactly where In the Zone left off. "

promotion

To promote the album, Jive set up a hotline that fans can use to leave a message for Spears. Some callers would get a call back from Spears personally. On Amazon.com there were audio samples of all the songs on the album weeks before the release.

In the United States, the 90-minute documentary Britney: For the Record was broadcast on MTV on November 30, 2008 . It sheds light on how Spears reports back to the music business. In Germany, a shortened version of the documentary was broadcast on Exclusiv on RTL on December 28, 2008 under the title Exklusiv Britney-Spezial: Mein Weg zurück . Several "circus"-themed posters have also been posted on Spear's official website to promote Circus .

On November 27, 2008, one day before the album was released in Germany, the singer performed with Womanizer at the Bambi Awards in Offenburg, Baden . This was Spear's first stay in Germany for almost four years. She also received the Bambi in the “Pop International” category.

On November 28, 2008, Spears appeared on the French talent show " Star Academy ", also with Womanizer . Your appearance brought the show record ratings.

Just one day later, there was an appearance in England on the casting show " X-Factor ", as before in Germany and France Spears presented the first single from Circus . The show saw 12.8 million viewers - the highest audience rating in the history of the show.

On December 2, 2008, Spears appeared on the New York City news show " Good Morning America ". She opened the show with Circus . Shortly afterwards, the Womanizer performance, already known to Europeans, followed . On December 3, 2008, the singer opened the lighting of the Christmas lights at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City with a short speech .

Commercial win

From Circus 219,000 copies were sold in the United States on the first day of sale. Just a few hours after its release in the US, the album entered the iTunes album charts at number 1, as did the singers' first four studio albums. Moreover, it is Circus is the second fastest-selling album by a female artist in 2008, only Fearless by Taylor Swift sold more quickly.
