In the late 1980s he was part of the first line-up of the Smashing Pumpkins, along with Billy Corgan , D'arcy Wretzky and James Iha . In 1996 he was kicked out of the band because of drug problems. He temporarily joined the band The Last Hard Men , in which he recorded a self-titled album with Sebastian Bach of Skid Row and Kelley Deal of the Breeders , which was not released until 2001. One of her songs, a cover version of Alice Cooper's School’s Out , was featured on the soundtrack for the film Scream! used. In 1999 he went back to the Smashing Pumpkins and released with them the albums Machina / The Machines of God and Machina II / The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music , before the band finally broke up.
Chamberlin founded the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex project in 2001 , with which he released the album Life Begins Again in 2005 on Sanctuary Records . He also played with Corgan in the band Zwan between 2001 and 2003 . With the reunited Smashing Pumpkins he released the album Zeitgeist in 2007 , which he also co-produced. In March 2009 Jimmy left the band. Since then he has been the drummer for the Skysaw group . In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him as 53rd of the 100 best drummers of all time . At the beginning of 2018 he joined the Smashing Pumpkins again with James Iha , so that three quarters of the band's original lineup are reunited.
