Gish is an album by the Smashing Pumpkins .
It was recorded at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison , Wisconsin from December 1990 to March 1991 . During the recording there were strong tensions within the band. Many consider the Smashing Pumpkins to be a grunge band, especially because of their early albums , but the psychedelic sound that is particularly prominent on Gish means that the band can be counted more towards the alternative rock or progressive rock genre. I Am One , Rhinoceros , Daydream and Bury Me were already available as demo versions in 1989. They were re-recorded for Gish.
The album was named after the silent film actress Lillian Gish .
The following songs were written for Gish but never made it onto the album:
- Blue (already published on the EP Lull , later also on the rarity collection Pisces Iscariot )
- Obscured (published on Pisces Iscariot )
- Slunk (released on the EP Lull )
- Why Am I So Tired? (released on the live CD Earphoria )
- Jesus Loves His Babies (never officially published; part of the online rarity collection Mashed Potatoes Boxset)
- La Dolly Vita (originally B-side on the single Tristessa , re-released on Pisces Iscariot )
