Darrell Hammond (2016)

Darrell Clayton Hammond (born October 8, 1955 in Melbourne , Florida ) is an American actor , comedian and impersonator . He gained fame primarily as a long-time member of the comedy series Saturday Night Live .

Life and comedy career

Darrell Hammond was born to Max and Margaret Hammond in Melbourne, Florida. He suffered from abuse from his mother during his childhood, while the father was heavily addicted to alcohol and violent after his experiences in World War II . Hammond says his talent for imitation was the only thing his mother liked.

After high school, Hammond attended Brevard Community College , while playing baseball . He later enrolled at the University of Florida , which he successfully graduated in 1978. He then moved to New York City , where, in addition to his work as a waiter, he also found employment at HB Studio , in theater productions and, at the age of 26, in a comedy club. Upon his return to Florida, Hammond was initially engaged as an off-speaker in the Orlando area .

In 1995 Hammond became a regular member of the comedy show Saturday Night Live , on which he appeared until 2009 and imitated or parodied over 100 personalities and celebrities from the United States. Until 2017, he was the longest cast member in the show's history until he was replaced by Kenan Thompson . In total, Hammond is said to have imitated 107 personalities. The best known is that of Bill Clinton . There are also Al Gore , Donald Trump , John McCain , Regis Philbin , Dick Cheney , Phil Donahue , Phil McGraw , John Travolta , Jesse Jackson and Sean Connery . He also imitated Don Pardo , the presenter of the show at the time, and was able to represent him if he was prevented from doing so. During the US presidency campaign in 2000 , Al Gore's campaign team deliberately looked at Hammond's imitation of the same to understand why he made a negative impression on viewers.

After 14 years at SNL , Hammon left the show in 2009. He was the last member of the cast to have been there since the 1990s. In 2014, however, he took on the role of presenter, which Don Pardo held until his death in August. Hammond is still active in this role today. Since then he can be seen again regularly in his Clinton and Trump imitations. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Hammond moved back to New York, assuming he would parody Trump regularly again. However, they followed the decision to go with Alec Baldwin , who, in the opinion of Lorne Michael's Trump, caught better at this time and was finally awarded an Emmy .

Acting and other activities

In addition to his comedy career, Hammond is also occasionally active in film and television. For example, he appeared in series such as Hinterm Mond immediately left , Law and Order: New York , Criminal Intent , Las Vegas , Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Criminal Minds . In 2009 he played a supporting role as The Deacon in the series Damages - Im Netz der Macht . Hammond has made film appearances with Agent Cody Banks , A Crazy Day in New York, and Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 5 .

In early 2015, Hammond was the advertising face of the Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food chain until Norm MacDonald replaced him in August. Previously, alongside Eli Manning and Peyton Manning, he was the face of Oreo cookie advertising with his Trump imitation . Occasionally Hammond also appears in the theater.
