Indorock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Indo rock (not to be confused with indie rock ) is primarily instrumental music of the rock 'n' roll direction , which is played by musicians who come from the former colony of the Dutch East Indies . Although the term Indo is used, it nonetheless applied to descendants from Dutch-Asian connections, as well as Dutch people with a complete Indonesian migration background. This music was of these, as well Molukkers , played in the late 1950s and the rock 'n' roll music was from the United States , as well as the instrumental music of the Shadows , The Ventures and The String-A-Longs inspired .

Although this music was mainly played from the mid-fifties to the mid-sixties, with a heyday from 1960 to 1963, the genre name "Indorock" was coined by fans of this genre in the mid-1970s and only became widely known in the eighties .

History of origin

In the years after Indonesia's declaration of independence , the Dutch, Indian Dutch (already called Indos) and the so-called “Inlanders” (natives) who fought for the Dutch colonial regime came to the Netherlands. In the post-war years, music was a welcome distraction. The most up-to-date American style of music at the time was rock 'n' roll and it reached the Netherlands in the mid-1950s and was quickly adopted by the Dutch from Indonesia. They were already familiar with American country music and the acoustic experiments of the American guitarist Les Pauls and therefore took up rock 'n' roll very quickly. The Indo rock was born.

Towards the end of the 1980s there was a revival of Indo rock.

show

The Tielman Brothers from Breda , still known as The Timor Rhythm Brothers in Indonesia , performed with great success at Expo 58 and released the first Dutch rock 'n' roll single ( Rock Little Baby Of Mine ) that year. . Works arose in Germany, where they worked with the early Beatles . George Harrison , particularly impressed by Andy Tielman's stage performance, later referred to him as "Andy, the Indo-Man".

Characteristic for the way the Indonesian bands played was the so-called "Gadahngang", a kind of jingling (a double attack after the backbeat ), which originally comes from Krontjong music , a musical genre from Java that was developed under Portuguese influence during the colonial period . The Dutch also call this “plenken”, which probably comes from the English word “plank” (board). This is presumably due to the fact that the musicians quickly switched to electric guitars , which no longer had a sound box and lay in their hands like a solid board. An additional rhythm guitarist or sometimes a second solo guitarist assisted the first solo guitarist with increased accents, counter-rhythms or heavier bass lines, played over two or three strings. In some cases, the baritone electric guitar was innovatively used as an additional solo instrument (also known as the "6-string bass", as it was played in the later hits of Hank the Knife and the Jets , among others ).

The names

The Crazy Rockers

Indorock was mainly represented in The Hague , where bands such as The Crazy Rockers , The Real Room Rockers , The Black Dynamites , The Black Magics , The Desmounts , The Hot Jumpers , The Fire Devils , The Twangies , The Black Eye and The performed Eastern Aces and The Valiants .

Pure guitar bands like Willy and his Giants or René and The Alligators were influenced by Indo rock , but belonged more to the nederrock category (comparable to German rock in Germany). The The Jumping Jewels were on the Fender Stratocaster -Sound the group The Shadows set.

The most famous band were the Tielman Brothers , but other bands also had their name. So z. B. Electric Johnny and his Skyrockets from Rotterdam their special South American rock style (a mixture of Indo rock with Latin American music ). Followed by Rotterdamers Oety & his Real Rockers and The Javalins , who also performed in Germany. The Sheridans of which Kaz Lux was a member came from Dordrecht . The Black Dynamites from The Hague and the Crazy Rockers (including members from Surinam ) also performed in Germany. The Javelins (not to be confused with the group around Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan The Javalins ) were the first famous Dutch overseas rock band that formed the basis for all subsequent bands from the provinces that were to follow; they were also well known in neighboring Belgium . There were many Indorock bands, which in turn inspired many other musicians.

Today there are several smaller record labels that specialize in releasing nostalgic Indo rock.

Discrimination

In the 1950s, many Indos experienced discrimination where they lived in the Netherlands. a. with slogans whitewashed on the walls. Later, in 1960, the television presenters Willem Duys and Mies Bouwman, after a performance by the Tielman Brothers, treated them with (allegedly) discriminatory comments. (" ... look like a bunch of monkeys with long hair / from the jungle "). This was one of the reasons why she and other indo bands continued their performances in Germany with greater success.

Decline

From the mid-1960s the popularity of Indo rock waned. After they fought to get another hit in 1964, the Beatles and in their wake the British Invasion , consisting of The Rolling Stones , The Kinks , The Who and other singer-songwriter bands, overtook them in popularity.

In addition to Indo rock, there were Indian teenage pop idols such as Lydia & The Melody Strings (hit: Send Me The Pillow from 1959), The Blue Diamonds, Anneke Grönloh , Margie Ball and Wanda from 1959 to 1963 . This is known as indopop .

Conclusion

Although the 1960 hit Kom van dat dak af by Peter Koelewijn is often seen as the prelude to rock 'n' roll in the Netherlands, it must be noted that much of this honor is due more to the Indian and Moluccan bands who were really the first to do rock 'n' roll in the Netherlands.

This misunderstanding is partly due to the limited success of the indo rock bands and partly to the fact that the best groups ( Tielman Brothers , Black Dynamites , Oety & his Real Rockers , Javalins , Crazy Rockers ) performed more abroad (so in Germany) than in the Netherlands.

In the late 1980s the Indo rockers received retrospective recognition, mainly due to the work of the musician and musicologist Lutgard Mutsaers with his monograph "Rockin 'Ramona" (originally the title of an album by the Black Dynamites ), which presented a comprehensive picture of Indo rock. "Rock 'n' Roller" of today's generation give the term "Indorock" its own identity, like the band Tjendol Sunrise , who remind their audience of the 50s and 60s through their shows and give them an insight into how Dutch rock ' n 'Roll was created and how it sounded back then.
