1, 2 Step is an R&B / Hip-Hop song by the US singers and rappers Ciara and Missy Elliott . The song appeared on Ciara's debut album Goodies (2004).

The song was written by Ciara and Missy Elliott and produced by Jazze Pha. On November 2, 2004, the song was released as the second single from the album. The song became a great chart success in the US and internationally and became a world hit. The song is very much inspired by the electro pop music of the 80s. In the lyrics, Ciara sings what the beat of the song feels like, and she encourages people to dance to her song. 1, 2 Step reached number 59 in the American decade charts in 2000. In the United States, the song only barely missed the top of the Billboard Hot 100 , the previous single Goodies was at the top of the American charts for seven weeks in 2004. Nonetheless, 1, 2 Step is Ciara's greatest success in the United States and in her career due to its sales figures: The song sold 3,458,000 downloads in the United States and over 7,000,000 worldwide.

1, 2 Step is one of four songs Ciara originally recorded at Doppler Studios in Atlanta two years before she released Goodies . Pha asked Missy Elliott if she could rap on song and she said yes. Elliott recorded her rap verses at the Hit Factory Criteria in Miami . Jazze Pha stated that he had produced the melody and instrumentation in four minutes.

1, 2 Step received critical acclaim. Contact Music gave the song three out of five stars and described the song as “ass shaking floor filling R&B” and “wicked melodic souful twist”. Jason Birchmeier from Allmusic said about the song: "It's good, if not great". Gerardo E. wrote "it's a feel good track, something that is not overproduced but works its magic". Kate Watkins of The Situation magazine wrote about the song: "a funky song in the style we have come to expect from Missy". Fazed magazine said the song was about "joys of dancing around with family". The Slant magazine described 1, 2 Step as “the fun dance track”.
1, 2 Step was nominated for Best Rap / Sung Collaboration at the 2006 Grammy Awards , but lost to Numb / Encore by Jay-Z and Linkin Park .

Benny Boom directed the music video for 1, 2 Step . It was taken at an Atlanta skate park.
Charts
1, 2 Step debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 74. From January 8, 2005, the song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks, making the song Ciara's second top ten hit in the United States. In the American Dance Airplay, Hot Digital Tracks and Mainstream Top 40 Charts, 1, 2 Step reached number 1.
Internationally, 1, 2 Step was also a great success for Ciara and Missy Elliott and reached the top ten in numerous countries. In Great Britain and Ireland 1, 2 Step went straight to number 3 in the charts and this was also the highest position in both countries. In Australia and New Zealand the song also reached number 2. In Germany and Switzerland the song was also a top 10 success for both performers. In the American annual charts in 2005, 1, 2 Step was placed 5th.
