Ciara: The Evolution (also The Evolution ) is the second studio album by the American R&B singer Ciara . It was released on December 5, 2006 in North America and on April 13, 2007 in Germany . Although the album was criticized, Ciara made it to the top of the Billboard 200 . It sold over 338,000 times in the first week. Although the album sold more than two million copies worldwide, surpassing the success of her debut album Goodies , it was only once certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States. The predecessor was awarded triple platinum.

production

During an MTV interview, Ciara stated that she wanted to get ten times her debut album goodies in Ciara: The Evolution . Nevertheless, she did not want a copy of her debut album with the album, although statements of her interview were often interpreted as such. She wants to keep her style, but the album should, as the title expresses it, represent her personal maturity, the evolution that her music, her dance style and her fashion have undergone.

In contrast to many other R&B stars, Ciara was heavily involved in the creation process. She wrote and co-produced some of the songs on the album, but also used a large arsenal of producers. Polow Da Don produced Ciara's songs Promise and Bang It Up . The Neptunes produced the two songs I Proceed and I'm Just Me . Bryan Michael Cox produced Ciara's emotional R&B ballad So Hard and Mr. Collipark produced the US bonus track Love You Better . By Will.i.am of Europe was iTunes -Bonustrack Do It produces, as well as the song Get In, Fit In , which is available on all editions.

In addition to Can't Leave 'Em Alone , Rodney Jerkins also produced Ciara's song Make It Last Forever . Dallas Austin produced the pop ballad I Found Myself .

Ciara had Lil Jon and Jazze Pha produce the songs That's Right and CRUSH . Lil Jon can also be heard as a feature on That's Right . Jazze Pha also produced the first single Get Up . Ciara brought the American rapper 50 Cent as a guest for her single Can't Leave 'Em Alone , produced by Rodney Jerkins , which was previously to be called Dope Boys . Another guest is Chamillionaire on Get Up.

Music style and lyrics

Musically, the album is kept in the typical 1980s contemporary R&B and electro sound of Ciara. There are also subtle influences from the Miami bass . The theme of "evolution" does not apply to the musical change, but rather is due to the concept of the album. The songs are classified into the four evolutionary themes “Music”, “Dance”, “Fashion” and “C” (= Ciara). Each of the different blocks has an interlude correspondence that specifies the theme. The interludes are small requests from Ciara. Musically, Ciara was influenced by role models like Janet Jackson and Aaliyah , but also by electro bands like Kraftwerk and Zapp .

reception

The album received mixed reviews. Andy Kellman wrote in a three-out-of-five-star review at Allmusic that all the talk about evolution can't hide the fact that the album actually sounded just like its predecessor. The album would certainly “deliver”, but it would be less good than expected.

Entertainment Weekly's Jody Rosen gave it a B + (2+ in German) and particularly praised the faster dance songs that would set her apart from other R&B artists such as Beyoncé , Rihanna and Cassie . Unfortunately, she also has some slow songs on the album that would tarnish the overall impression. Dorian Lynskey said that Ciara was not yet a Beyoncé, but a song like Like a Boy , which reminds of the glory days of Destiny's Child , shows that it might one day be.

Anja Lindenlaub from Laut.de , on the other hand, only awarded two (out of five) stars. Although the album "turned out to be quite catchy and comes up with groovy dance songs and slow ballads, as one would not otherwise expect from an R'n'B album", many songs are bad and splash around. In addition, the claim to make a girl power album is rather difficult if the lyrics take on old role stereotypes. The reviewer described some of the songs as "" I'm the sweet little bitch and my wild, bad boyfriend, who sometimes treats me like dirt, has to protect me "-Shit".
