John Robert Baines (born September 25, 1937 in Colchester ) is a former English football player .

Career

Baines was registered as an amateur player at the same time both Colchester United and Colchester Casuals after United had disbanded their third team. During his military service, during which he was trained as a parachutist , he received his first professional contract in January 1960. Baines, who is usually called up as a center forward, was the best scorer of the reserve team in both the 1960/61 season (16 goals) and 1961/62. He made his debut for the first team in March 1961, when he replaced the injured regular center forward Neil Langman in three consecutive games within a week . Baines remained goalless in the games and despite two wins, the club rose at the end of the third division season 1960/61 as penultimate in the fourth division .

Baines also did not get a league lower, coach Benny Fenton had only 17 players in the direct re-promotion over the entire course of the 1961/62 season (50 competitive games), regular center forward Martyn King played 49 of them. Baines' fourth and last competitive appearance for Colchester is dated September 1, 1962. As a replacement for King, who was at a tennis tournament, he played in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic , his opponent Tony Nelson was, according to the press, "usually too good for [him]" . Baines left the club a little later and emigrated to Australia . There he played in Adelaide, South Australia for Port Adelaide SC and Elizabeth City, at the latter club he trained under his former Colchester teammate Sammy McLeod .
