The X-Ecutioners (1998)

The X-Ecutioners are a group of DJs from New York .

history

Roc Raida founded the group in 1989, then still under the name X-Men . Next to him were Steve Dee, Johnny Cash and Sean Cee. They chose the name X-Men because the group often took part in DJ battles and one of their opponents in New York were the Clark Kent's Supermen . Steve Dee invented beat juggling the year after it was founded , which the X-Men continued to perfect.

The group's line-up changed frequently, and in the meantime it had up to eleven DJs. Rob Swift from Queens was invited to the X-Men by Steve Dee in 1991 after the Northeast DMC Finals. Brooklyn-based Total Eclipse was recorded after battles with multiple members and winning the 1996 ITF World Championship.

In 1997 Swift negotiated a deal with Asphodel Records and the group released their first album, X-Pressions . At the same time, she changed her name to X-Ecutioners for legal reasons. The album still contained little rap, but mainly turntables and beats. The competitive aspect of the performances of the X-Ecutioners subsided, instead they saw themselves primarily as musicians. Swift explained this development as follows:

“Although we come from a battle culture, we have realized that we no longer have to compete when we perform. Just appear! It's about making good music, not showing people that you can still scratch at 100 miles an hour. "

In 2002 the X-Ecutioners released their second album, Built From Scratch , on Loud Records . At the time, the cast included Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Total Eclipse and Mista Sinista. The album was again a lot more commercial than the group's previous work. It features contributions from MOP , Linkin Park , Pharoahe Monch , Xzibit and Big Pun , among others . It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and sold 346,000 times in the United States. The single It's Goin 'Down was also successful with number 85 in the Billboard Hot 100 and other international placements. It came in 7th place in Great Britain, 56th in Germany and 69th in Switzerland.

Shortly after the release of Built From Scratch , Mista Sinista left the X-Ecutioners. Instead, DJ Boogie Blind and DJ Precision joined the group.

The third album, Revolutions , which was released on Columbia Records in 2004 , also hit the Billboard charts (number 118).

In 2007 Rob Swift, Total Eclipse, and Precision founded the Ill Insanity project . Founding member Roc Raida died in 2009 .
