Asphodel Records was an American independent label based in San Francisco .
history
The label was founded in 1992 by Mitzi Johnson. The name Asphodel refers to the plant of the same name and its mythological meaning as the flower of the underworld . The first release was the self-titled debut album by the folk trio Blue Rubies , in which Mitzi Johnson played the lute and sang.
Over 100 publications by various artists followed. Mainly represented were the music genres turntablism , electronica , ambient , illbient , electroacoustic music , trip-hop , spoken word , noise , techno and lounge music .
In January 2011 Johnson announced the discontinuation of the label on the website.
