Zbigniew Karkowski

Zbigniew Karkowski (born March 17, 1958 in Krakow , Poland , † December 12, 2013 in Peru ) was an avant-garde composer and musician in the field of electronic and electro-acoustic music . He was mainly concerned with radical electronic surface sound design and understood his music as an objection to academic new music , which could not get rid of its roots from the 19th century.

Live and act

Karkowski studied composition and musical aesthetics (modern music) in Gothenburg and computer music at Chalmers University of Technology . After completing his education in Sweden, he studied sonology for a year at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague . Since 1994 he lived and worked in Tokyo and was active in the local underground noise scene .

Karkowski worked with acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments. He has written pieces for large orchestras as well as an opera and various chamber music pieces that have been performed by various ensembles in Sweden, Poland and Germany. With Edwin van der Heide and Atau Tanaka he was a founding member of the electroacoustic music performance trio Sensorband . On most of his roughly 60 albums, Karkowski worked from documentaries and adaptations to simple decorations of field recordings . Different interference signals (especially distortions ) are particularly noticeable during processing .

With the formation Sensorband, Karkowski invented and realized a monumental, 120 m² musical instrument called the Soundnet . For Mutation (1999) he obtained permission to enter a temple in Kyoto .

He died of pancreatic cancer in December 2013.
