Grão Vasco (around 1750)

Grão Vasco (German: "great Vasco", actually Vasco Fernandes ; * 1475 in Viseu ; † 1542 , in some sources: * 1480; † 1543) was an important Portuguese painter.

life and work

His work is characterized by intensely colored paintings, influenced by the Italian , even more so the Flemish and especially the German Renaissance . The first noteworthy records about him come from the years 1501/1502, when he is already mentioned as a (also economically) successful painter. In 1514 he worked in the workshop of Jorge Afonso in Lisbon.

Turning to the Renaissance, he continued to develop his style. He was interested in the Antwerp Mannerists and contributed to the spread of Albrecht Dürer's art in Portugal. For example, figures from Dürer's Melencolia I can be seen in his painting "Jesus in the house of Martha and Maria" from 1530 (on display in the Grão Vasco Museum in Viseu) .

He worked mainly in Viseu, Lamego and Coimbra , where of his four works for the Santa Cruz Monastery only one Pentecost painting in the sacristy has survived (which he signed Velascus ). From around 1535 he developed increasingly mannerist traits.

meaning

An extensive collection of his works can be seen in the Museum Grão Vasco in Viseu, which was founded in 1916 in the former convent school next to the cathedral and was restored, expanded and redesigned between 2001 and 2003 by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura .

Some works are u. a. can also be seen in the Lamego Museum, in the main church of Freixo de Espada à Cinta (1520) and in the Salzedas Monastery . In the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon his depends Assunção da Virgem and Soares dos Reis National Museum in Porto's is Santa Luzia to see.

Schools, wines, hotels and a TAP Portugal plane are named after him.
