Jorge Afonso (* around 1470, † around 1540) was an important Portuguese painter .

Jorge Afonso was appointed court painter by King Manuel I in 1508 and again by King John III in 1529 . He worked mostly in Lisbon . Here he had an important studio near the Igreja de São Domingos church , where a whole generation of Portuguese painters were trained - including Cristovão de Figueiredo , Garcia Fernandes , Gregório Lopes and Jorge Leal . Vasco Fernandes / Grão Vasco also worked for him in 1514. Today his works can be found e.g. B. in the National Museum of Ancient Art ( Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga ), the most important art museum in Portugal.

The main altar panels attributed to Jorge Afonso were commissioned by Queen Eleanor of Portugal , the widow of King John II and sister of King Manuel I. In 1515 Jorge Afonso painted the main altarpiece of the Convento da Madre de Deus monastery in Lisbon for them. This magnificent altar panel is now in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon.

Between 1520 and 1530 Afonso painted 14 panels for the main altar of the Convento de Jesus monastery in Setúbal - again on behalf of Queen Eleanor of Portugal. The panel paintings are now on display in the monastery museum.

The decor on the walls of the Convento de Cristo monastery church from 1530 in Tomar is also attributed to Jorge Afonso's studio .
