Queen Eleanor of Portugal

Eleanor of Portugal , also called Eleanor of Viseu , (* May 2, 1458 ; † November 17, 1525 ) was Queen of Portugal from 1481 to 1495 (as a wife, not as regent of her own right) from the House of Avis .

Eleanor was born to Prince Ferdinand of Portugal , Duke of Viseu (a son of King Edward I of Portugal ). Her mother, Beatriz, was also a princess of Portugal (she was the granddaughter of John I of Portugal ).

In 1471 she married King John II of Portugal . Her husband was her paternal cousin and her great cousin on her mother's side. The marriage gave her the title of Queen of Portugal, which she wore until her husband's death in 1495.

The queen is credited with founding the Portuguese city of Caldas da Rainha . In 1484, on a trip from Óbidos to Batalha , she is said to have come across some rural residents who were bathing in a foul-smelling watering hole near the road. The people told her that the warm water had healing powers. Eleonore also believed that she had been cured of a few malaises after a bath and had a bathing establishment built at this point for healing purposes. Construction began the following year and was not finished until 1496 or 1497. In 1488, however, operations began. Around the "Queen's thermal spring", the translated name of the place, a settlement soon formed as the nucleus of the city of Caldas da Rainha.

With Johann II Eleanor had two sons, one of whom died shortly after birth. The heir to the throne Alfons also died in 1491 and thus before the king. It was mainly thanks to Eleonore's influence that John II failed to implement his plan to succeed his illegitimate son George of Lancaster, Duke of Coimbra , and instead worked with Eleonore's brother, Emanuel I, the lucky one , the next legitimate male relative, John II, succeeded him on the throne.
