Isabella of Castile, Queen of Portugal

Isabella of Aragón and Castile , also called Elisabeth in the historiography , in Spanish and Portuguese Isabel de Aragón y Castilla or Isabel de Trastámara y Trastámara (born October 2, 1470 in Dueñas ; † August 23, 1498 in Saragossa ) was an infanta of Castile and Aragón . Through her marriage to Emanuel I, the lucky one , she was titular queen of Portugal from 1497 until her death .

Life

Isabella was the eldest daughter of the Catholic kings , i.e. of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon .

Isabella had four siblings, including Queen Joanna the Mad of Castile and Princess Catherine of Aragón , the first wife of King Henry VIII of England , whose divorce, which was not sanctioned by the Pope, led to the Anglican Church splitting off from the Catholic Church .

In 1490 she married Prince Alfons of Portugal , son of King John II and heir to the throne. Alfons died a year after the wedding and before his father, so he never ascended the Portuguese throne. Since John II had no further legitimate children, the new heir to the throne was Emanuel, the Duke of Viseu and Beja, the closest male relative of John II.

The marriage between Isabella and Alfons was primarily to create dynastic ties between Portugal and Spain, which could enable the two countries to be united into a great Iberian empire (analogous to the situation in Spain, which made its existence the unification of Castile and Aragon through the marriage of Isabella's parents). Since this plan had initially been dashed with the death of Alfonso, Isabella married Emanuel in 1497, who after the death of John II in 1495 had ascended the Portuguese throne as Emanuel I the Lucky . Through this marriage she became queen of Portugal after all. However, she died of complications following the birth of her first son, Miguel da Paz, just one year after the marriage . He was the designated heir of three kingdoms (Portugal, Castile and Aragon), but also died in his second year of life.

After her death, her husband Emanuel married her younger sister, Maria of Aragón .
