The license plate system of Turkey consists of a simple numbering of the provinces by alphabetical order. This system is similar to the numbering of the French departments, but the identification of the province is on the left side of the Turkish license plate.
The license plates are similar to the EU model. They show a blue bar with the nationality code TR on the left edge .
Turkey is divided into 81 provinces. The numbering is arranged alphabetically from 01 to 67. There are also irregularities in the alphabetical order due to changes in province names: 33 - Mersin (until 2002 İçel), 46 - Kahramanmaraş (until 1973 Maraş) and 63 - Şanlıurfa (until 1984 Urfa). Provinces that were added later received the identification numbers from 68 to 81.
In 2013, the introduction of new license plates with microchips is being discussed.
