Miguel da Paz ( Spanish Miguel de la Paz de Portugal ; Portuguese also Miguel da Paz de Avis y Aragón ; * 23 August 1498 Saragossa ; † 20 July 1500 Granada ) was heir to the throne of Portugal, Castile ( Prince of Asturias ) and Aragon ( Prince of Girona ).

origin

Miguel was the only son of King Manuel I of Portugal from a sideline of the House of Avis and his first wife Isabella of Aragón and Castile from the House of Trastámara .

His father, King Manuel, was the son of Ferdinand of Portugal, Duke of Viseu and Beja, a brother of King Alfonso V of Portugal .

His mother, Isabella, was the eldest daughter of the Catholic Kings Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon . Her parents became kings of Castile in 1474 and kings of Aragon in 1479 . Her first marriage was to Alfonso of Portugal . Her first husband died on July 13, 1491.

Succession in Castile and Aragon

Miguel's mother, Isabella, became the heir to the throne of Asturias when her parents took over the government in Castile . Isabella's brother Johann was born on June 28, 1478 . Due to the Castilian inheritance law, Isabella lost the title of Princess of Asturias, which went to her brother. After Isabella's parents also became kings of Aragon in 1479, Johann received the title of Prince of Girona as heir to the throne in the lands of the Crown of Aragon .

After Johann's death on October 4, 1497, the titles passed to Isabella. Isabella had to have the rights of inheritance and the titles confirmed by the Cortes of Castile and the lands of the Crown of Aragon. To do this, she traveled with her husband Manuel I from Portugal to Castile and Aragon.

Life

On August 23, 1498, Isabella gave birth to her son Miguel in Saragossa , the capital of Aragon. Isabella died in childbirth. Miguel became heir to the throne in the lands of the Crown of Castile and the lands of the Crown of Aragon through the death of his mother. Miguel was heir to the throne of Portugal through his father, King Manuel.

King Manuel returned to Portugal and agreed that his inheritance should remain with his grandparents. Miguel was to be raised according to Portuguese, Castilian, and Aragonese customs, which did not differ significantly.

Miguel died in Granada on July 20, 1500 . He was in the crypt of the Royal Chapel of the Cathedral of Granada buried.
