Juana Enríquez y Fernández de Córdoba (* 1425 in Torrelobatón ; † February 13, 1468 in Saragossa ) was a Castilian noblewoman and, through her marriage to John of Aragón, Queen of the Kingdoms of the Aragonese Crown . About her son Ferdinand II. Of Aragon she is the grandmother of Johanna the Mad and the great-grandmother of Emperor Charles V .

Life

Juana Enríquez was the daughter of Fadrique Enríquez, Señor de Melgar y Medina de Rioseco, Admiral of Castile, and Maria Fernández de Córdoba. Fadrique Enríquez († 1473) in turn was a son of Alonso Enriquez y Angulo de Córdoba (1354-1429), Admiral of Castile, and Señor de Medina de Rioseco, and a grandson of Fadrique Alfonso de Castilla (1333-1358), an illegitimate Son of King Alfonso XI. of Castile (1311-1350) and Leonor de Guzman and twin brother of King Henry II (see family list of the House of Burgundy-Ivrea ).

Since Johann, although he was only de iure uxoris King of Navarre, did not hand over the government of Navarre to his eldest son Charles of Viana after Blanka's death , Juana became Queen of Navarre through marriage. Understandably, she supported his position, even when he transferred the succession to the throne from Karl to his youngest daughter from his marriage to Blanka, Eleanor of Navarre , again without relinquishing power. When Karl died in 1461, she was suspected of having ordered his poisoning. She fled to Girona , where she placed herself under the protection of the bishop.

Three years earlier Juana had become Queen of Aragón, Mallorca , Valencia and Sicily through the death of her brother-in-law Alfons V of Aragón - again as the wife of Johann .

Juana's children with Johann II were:

In the last years of her life, Juana strove to marry her son Ferdinand to Isabella of Castile (1451–1504), the half-sister and presumptive heiress of King Henry IV , but she never saw the success of her efforts. She died of breast cancer on February 13, 1468 , a year before the marriage between Ferdinand and Isabella, who would later become the Catholic Kings .
