Mix Master Mike (* 4. April 1970 in Daly City , California ; bourgeois Michael Schwartz ) is a DJ from San Francisco , USA . He was the first to have three world championship titles as a DJ.

Life

Mix Master Mike was born and raised in San Francisco. In his family environment there were several record collectors who introduced and brought him closer to the most diverse styles of music. Most of it was 1970s funk .

In 1984, at the age of 14, he first came into contact with hip hop . Mike got two old cassette players and speakers from his uncle's old storage room. He tried to play different songs in sync with each other. He used the pause button to slow the pace. At the time he was seeing a certain Grandmaster DXT appear on television . He was playing with turntables and Mike saw someone scratch for the first time . From then on, Mike really wanted to be a “Scratch DJ”.

Mike performed at various small parties and was introduced to a certain Richard Quitevis at one of those parties. Richard was enthusiastic about Mike's “scratching” and visited him the next day to learn techniques and tricks from him. Richard Quitevis became a DJ himself and called himself DJ QBert . Together with DJ Qbert and DJ Apollo, Mix Master Mike founded Invisibl Skratch Piklz .

At the time, Mike's mother's caring became too much and he left home to join a group of DJs in Sacramento . There he learned that QBert had impressed many people with his DJ skills - he also heard of a DJ battle in the school cafeteria. Mike attended. The duel between Mix Master Mike and QBert is now considered a legendary moment in hip-hop history . Mike won, but QBert won in rematch.

Mike and QBert were constantly in direct competition with each other, but they didn't want to continue and decided to continue acting as a team: as a kind of "DJ scratch band". In 1991 began to participate in major competitions. Mix Master Mike became the first West Coast DJ to win the Supermen Battle for World Supremacy in New York City in 1992 . In the same year Mix Master Mike, QBert and DJ Apollo took part in the DMC World Championship and won the final in London. In 1993 Mike and QBert successfully defended the title together. DMC later called the gig the greatest scratch set in human history .

In 1994, Mike and QBert received a call from DMC and were asked not to participate in the World Cup to give other DJs a chance. Instead, they were offered to become members of the jury.

In 1998 Mix Master Mike contacted the Beastie Boys , talked and scratched their answering machine and was hired for the album Hello Nasty and the tour that followed, replacing the then Beastie Boys DJ, DJ Hurricane .

In 1999 he was a member of Methods of Mayhem , founded by Tommy Lee .

In 2016 he accompanied Metallica on their Worldwired Tour .

Mix Master Mike is believed to be the inventor of tweak scratch, a technique in which the platter is moved back and forth while the platter is stopped. This reduces the speed of the sounds as well as the pitch.
