Underground 9 - Demos (also: Linkin Park Underground 9 - Demos , LPU9 - Demos ) is the ninth edition of the annual CD of the official Linkin Park fan club Linkin Park Underground (LPU). It contains B-sides and demos that have been created over ten years. In contrast to most of the eight older editions, all titles were previously unpublished.

Commenting on the release of Underground 9 demos , Mike Shinoda said, “Songs change all the time during the creative process, so we thought it would be cool to release early versions of familiar tracks. The versions in this collection represent important moments in the evolution of each song: different vocals, variations in music, and missing parts. They are snapshots of our ongoing work. "

A-Six is the long version of A.06 , a short instrumental piece that was released on the CD Underground V2.0 .

Overall, the Faint demo sounds a bit rougher than the finished version. The biggest difference, however, is the missing chorus, which is replaced by an instrumental part.

Sad is a short instrumental demo made by By Myself .

Fear , the Leave Out All the Rest demo, is sung by Mike Shinoda in contrast to the final version. The lyrics are completely different.

The demo for Figure.09 is comparable to Faint : It sounds rougher and more aggressive overall. Also striking is the song title, which confirms that the name Figure.09 was originally a name for a demo, which was however retained.

Stick and Move is an early instrumental demo by Runaway . It also differs from the version of the same name from 1997, when the band was still called Xero and the song still had lyrics, albeit a completely different one from Runaway , and was sung by Mark Wakefield.

Across the Line is not a demo, but a B-side . After a short excerpt from the demo Japan was recorded in an episode of LPTV (Linkin Park TV) , many fans asked the band about it. Due to the positive reactions, the band decided to finish the demo that had actually been made for the album Minutes to Midnight . The result is Across the Line .

Of Drawing , the demo of Breaking the Habit , it is known that previously existed a shorter version. The version on the EP is an instrumental that is quite similar to the album version.

Drum song , The Little Things Give You Away demo, is sung by Mike Shinoda like Fear and not by Chester Bennington as is the case on Minutes of Midnight .

The EP was released in the LPU online shop on November 23, 2009 - as usual towards the end of the calendar year. For the first time, and so far for the first time, an LPU CD was also available in German stores. Outside the fan club, the EP was released on February 5, 2010.

reception

Laut.de's criticism was devastating: Reviewer Yan Vogel wrote the album a. a. "Rip off" and "sham package par excellence" and headlines "Frequency castrated synthetic products in the demo stage". He also criticizes the "loveless combination". Other reviews are also negative, albeit a little milder. Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard finds the songs “more or less informative” and the concept is well meant, but cannot recommend the EP to the average consumer. Brian Banks from musicvice.com sums up the album with the word "unnecessary".

Many fans praise the fact that an LPU album only contains unreleased tracks for the first time, but criticize the fact that the EP, like the sampler Songs from the Underground , which contains some tracks from earlier LPU CDs, was also released outside the LPU store. because the exclusivity is lost. Since then, the annual LPU CDs have once again been sold exclusively through the fan club.
