The band Dead by Sunrise was a side project of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington . In addition to Bennington, the band also belonged to Amir Derakh, Ryan Shuck, Anthony Valcic and Frank Zummo from the band Julien-K and Brandon Belsky.

The band's only album Out of Ashes was released in October 2009.

Band history

Band name

The band's first name, Snow White Tan , was understood as an allusion to the David Bowie song Ziggy Stardust , which contains the lines of text " Came on so loaded, man / Well hung and snow-white tan ".

The reason for the name change was not explained by the band, but Chester Bennington commented on the two names in various interviews. The first term "Snow White Tan" did not seem appropriate to the singer after a difficult time for him personally, as the name did not express the peculiarities of this period clearly enough. In addition, Snow White Tan would have too poetic a character for him. The name "Dead by Sunrise", however, appropriately refers to this time at the beginning of the recordings for the first album, in which he was in a " self-destructive form ". During “certain phases of admission” he went through a “very difficult time”. He justified this with the divorce from his wife Samantha, the break with Linkin Park and problems with the record company. During this time - Bennington defined it as the years 2005 and 2006 - he would have "literally wondered if he would make it to the next day" ("[...] literally wondering if I was making it to the next day ")

Dead by Sunrise and Julien-K

The joint work with the fellow musicians from the band "Julien-K" was originally planned as a solo project by Bennington, but he said in an interview that the solo career he wanted to start over the four years since the beginning (2005– 2009) became a band. Regarding the identity of the two bands, guitarist and singer Ryan Shuck said:

Chester Bennington live at the Sonisphere Festival in Finland (2009)

Both bands are the same. The one where Chester sings and writes is Dead By Sunrise, but when I sing, and Amir and I are the primary writers, it becomes Julien-K and it's more electro and much darker ... Julien-K and Dead by Sunrise are basically a creative collective, we're sort of a Warhol-style factory in that sense […] Dead by Sunrise is Chester's Julien-K if that makes any sense.

“The two bands are the same. The one that Chester sings and writes in is Dead By Sunrise, but when I sing and Amir and I are the main contributors, it becomes Julien-K and it's more electronic and a lot darker ... Julien-K and Dead by Sunrise are basically a creative community. In this sense, we are a kind of "production facility for a Warholian idiom " [...] Dead by Sunrise is Chester's Julien-K, if that makes any sense. "

Out of Ashes

The preparatory work for the band's first album goes back a long time. The first pieces of music are said to have been created at the time the first Linkin Park album Hybrid Theory was recorded in 1999/2000. In fact, work on Out of Ashes began in 2006 and the release was originally planned for this year as well. As a result, it was first postponed to early 2007 and later - due to Chester's obligations at Linkin Park - to an even later date. In a 2008 interview with the Orange County Register , Bennington said he was working on his solo project and on the fourth Linkin Park album at the same time. Out of Ashes finally began recording in July 2008, and on May 19, 2009 Chester Bennington announced the name of this first Dead by Sunrise album on Twitter . Ultimately, the album was first released on September 30, 2009 in Japan, before it was released on October 9, 2009 in Germany and worldwide on October 13, 2009.

Music genre

On July 21, 2009, Bennington said in a News article:

I came up with a few songs that felt and sounded really good, but I knew they weren't right stylistically for Linkin Park. They were darker and moodier than anything I'd come up with for the band. So I decided to work on them on my own rather than turn them over and have them transformed into Linkin Park tracks.

“I wrote a few songs that sounded and felt good, but I knew they weren't the right style for Linkin Park. They were darker and more somber than anything I've ever written for the band. So I decided to edit it for myself instead of changing it and turning it into Linkin Park titles. "

When asked in an interview about the difference between Dead by Sunrise and Linkin Park, Bennington replied:

It's hard to describe. Like, describe the difference between Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, you know what I mean? It's almost impossible. There are obvious things about it that when you listen to it, you'll know it's not a Linkin Park record. You're not gonna get confused. You'll have to hear it.

“It's hard to describe. It's like describing the difference between Soundgarden and Alice in Chains , you know what I'm talking about? It's almost impossible. There are unmistakable elements that, when you hear them, will tell you it's not a Linkin Park recording. You will notice. You just have to hear it. "

In other interviews, Bennington cited the “lack of hip-hop influences” as the biggest difference and described the music of Dead by Sunrise as “darker” and “more emotional” than the music of Linkin Park.

On February 4th, 2009 Mike Shinoda described his impressions of the music of Dead by Sunrise on his blog. Some of the songs had "fantastic vocals " and were influenced by artists such as T. Rex to Tears for Fears . Shinoda called the album a "fist-in-the-stomach rock" album. In an interview with Billboard Online , he stated that the album was " much more of a rock album ", referring to the Linkin Park albums.
