Airbeat One (also: Airbeat-One) is a festival of electronic dance music in Neustadt-Glewe , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was first held in 2002 as Airbase One and has grown from fewer than 1,000 visitors to over 65,000 today. It is the largest festival of its kind in Northern Germany, although the genres represented overlap with the Fusion Festival , which has up to 70,000 visitors and extends over 4 days.
history
First realizations
The first edition of the EDM festival took place in 2002 on the airfield in Neustadt-Glewe . It was launched under the name Airbase One (also: Airbase-One ) by the event technology company Music Eggert , also known as Me-Events . The festival was already a success this year and an annual edition was confirmed. For trademark reasons, the third edition was renamed Airbeat One . In 2007 the festival took place at a lake near Neu Zachun .
Musical classification and development
The style of music was initially very trance-oriented, but lost its importance with Airbeat One. Because of this, more stages have been set up that concentrate on a certain genre and are of equal size. These included directions such as hard style , techno , psytrance and house . In 2010 a main stage was set up for the first time to present well-known artists independent of the genre on a main stage. While eleven stages were to be found in the following year, this number was quickly reduced and the focus was placed on the most important stages. The hardstyle, goa, deep and electro house styles came to the fore. From 2009 to 2013 the event was hosted on Thursdays by newcomer DJs from the non-profit Coreplex e. V. opened on the camping area, while the first DJs have been playing on a stage on the VIP area on Wednesdays since 2014.
The Sony Music sub-company “Electronic Dance” or “Club Sounds” produced documentary films and interviews with a number of artists in 2015. After the number of visitors did not increase last year, the largest increase to date was measured with 27,000 tickets sold.
Since 2016: Rapidly increasing popularity
In 2016 the 15th edition of the festival was celebrated and a record was set with 40,000 visitors. In addition, the organizer Q-Dance operated its own stage. The line-up of this stage was shaped in particular by representatives of the hard style (including the raw style ). Well-known hardstyle DJs with a much higher level of awareness could be won over. These include D-Block & S-te-Fan , Noisecontrollers , Brennan Heart , Wasted Penguinz, Da Tweekaz , Bass Modulators and Audiotricz, as well as the returning Coone , Code Black and Atmozfears . In addition, the Airbeat One team announced that the entire line-up for this edition should be significantly larger than that of previous years. Over 40 acts performed on a stage set up on nearby Barracuda Beach.
In 2017, the number of visitors increased by a further 5,000. With the appearance of the Dutch DJ Hardwell , another great EDM scene celebrated its debut at the festival. Even Timmy Trumpet and Headhunterz could be won for the MainStage. Both celebrated great successes in the previous year and played on the main stage for the first time. There were various B2B ("back-to-back") appearances on the Q-Dance stage, which has been completed for the first time to date; so among other things played Ran-D and Atmozfears and Angerfist and Partyraiser together on stage.
In 2018 the festival site opened on Wednesday. Separate tickets were sold for the so-called pre-opening party. After a few days, over 60% of the tickets were sold out. This party was headlined by Nicky Romero , Blasterjaxx and Bassjackers . The pre-opening of the main artists took place in the first stage “The Arena”, which was hosted by the record labels “Boombox” and “Transmission”. The camping site was also fully booked before the advance booking was completed. With a total of over 55,000 visitors, a new visitor record was set. In addition, the so-called cashless payment system was introduced for the first time in the 17th edition, in which cashless payment is used and instead the fictitious currency “Airbeat pound” installed on the bracelet is used. Through acts like Zedd , Marshmello and DJ Snake , the style of music represented on the main stage was expanded to include complextro , dubstep and trap .
With around 65,000 spectators, the theme “A trip to India” was celebrated in front of a main stage based on the Taj Mahal in 2019 . The appearance of the Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix and the closing set by Timmy Trumpet with subsequent fireworks were two highlights of the festival. Furthermore, the American duo The Chainsmokers made their debut at the Airbeat One Festival. Away from the festival area, the cashless payment system was retained and a new attraction was created with the option of a parachute jump.
On April 16, 2020, the organizer Music Eggert announced that the planned 19th edition of the Airbeat One Festival, originally planned from July 8 to 12, 2020, will be canceled due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic . The thematic focus A trip to Italy , which should take place in 2020, has been moved to 2021 accordingly.
organization
The site is located at the Neustadt-Glewe airfield in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, directly on the A24 Hamburg-Berlin. In addition to the five stages, one of which is only accessible to visitors with VIP tickets, the area also includes a camping area.
There are several long-distance buses to get to the Airbeat One. Since 2016, tickets for the campsite have only been sold by pre-order. It is possible to visit the nearby lake and town by free shuttle buses.
Camping grounds
The camping area is divided into a VIP, loud and quiet area. Furthermore, the so-called Green Camp was offered for the first time in 2017. Vehicles are not permitted on this.
It is possible to rent your own Dixi toilet and safeboxes with a power connection. Motor sports enthusiasts perform two-wheeled tricks on a bike and motocross track. Furthermore, the coffee manufacturer Melitta will come to the campsite with its own stage in 2019, on which coffee can be drunk to the sounds of mostly regional DJs.
Festival site
Main stage
The main stage represents well-known DJs from various genres. Most of these can be classified in the field of house music, but musical styles such as trap , electro-pop or, despite having their own stage, hardstyle are also represented on the stage. Furthermore, a large pyrotechnic and lighting show takes place here, in connection with which the annual fireworks display on Sunday can be seen. In previous years this took place at midnight, in 2019 for the first time at 2:45 when the last act on the main stage finished its set. The style of the main stage is adapted to the annual festival motto. The DJs who perform are usually supported by an MC.
Q-dance stage
Since 2016, the stage on which Hardstyle is presented has been hosted by the music organizer and record label Q-Dance (including the organizers of Defqon.1 and Q-Base ). In 2016 it was the so-called Lion Stage and the RAM Stage was announced for 2017 . In addition to classic hardstyle acts, DJs from the rawstyle and hardcore sectors also perform here . Villain is active as an MC on stage throughout the festival. The Q-Dance stage is the second largest stage on the site and also has a large repertoire of pyrotechnics, which is why fireworks take place here on Sunday.
The arena
In 2018 there was a new stage called The Arena. This was hosted on Thursday by the “Boombox” label, where you could experience trap and bass DJs such as Carnage, Jauz, Moksi and others. On the other two days the stage hosted the label "Transmission", which is particularly known for its one-day event in Prague. The line-up included well-known trance DJs such as Above & Beyond , Ferry Corsten pres. Gouryella and Markus Schulz . For 2019 it was announced that the stage would not be feasible for unexplained reasons.
Second stage
On the second stage you can hear music from the field of psychedelic trance . The floor is covered and both the stage and the dance floor are smaller than the other areas, but the stage is open almost 24 hours a day. The focus here is on the light show.
Terminal stage
The Terminal Stage is based on rather calmer music. Mainly DJs from the fields of deep, tropical and future house music perform here. But bass house is now also widely represented. Similar to the Q-Dance stage, some of the more well-known DJs perform here as selected acts on the main stage. The floor is in a big top.
VIP Waterworld
The VIP Waterworld is only accessible to owners of a VIP ticket. The stage is in front of a pool. The total opening time is shorter and starts in the morning. Stylistically, the stage can be classified in the area of chill house music.
Hospitality
Aside from the normal camping site, there is the option of booking one of the hospitality packages. This is a demarcated area on which a so-called camping village is being built. You can rent tents there. The festival area is easier to reach from there than from the normal campsite. In addition, special decorations have been set up there, there is daily garbage cleaning and its own security and its own parking lot. However, the price for the packages is set very high. A double tent can only be purchased for owners of a VIP ticket.
Offshoot
- The Indian Spirit Festival has been organized by Music Eggert since the mid-2000s . It has been taking place in the small town of Eldena near Ludwigslust for several years . The theme of the festival as well as the music goes in the direction of psychedelic trance with acts like Liquid Soul, Neelix and Fabio & Moon. The psytrance DJ pacemaker is part of the festival's organization team. In 2018 the festival recorded over 8,000 visitors.
- In 2012 the so-called Snowbeat Festival took place for the first time, behind which Music Eggert is also behind . Since then, this has been held in the winter sports hall in Wittenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and also represents house , psychedelic trance, hardstyle and deep house music. The line-up also shows parallels to Airbeat One. 4,000 tickets were sold in 2016.
- As part of the festival, the organizers have been organizing so-called club tours since 2014, during which a large number of Airbeat One headliners appear in various clubs that were spread across Germany. In particular, the representation of different styles of music is taken into account, as a result of which these are usually played in clubs that represent the different styles of music on different stages.
- Since 2015, the Electric Sea Dance Festival has been held every year in December, which also specializes in comparable musical styles. In contrast, the festival will only take place on one day on the HanseMesse site in Rostock . Around 4,000 visitors were part of the festival in 2016.
Trivia
- An accident at work occurred during the construction of the Airbeat One in 2014. A technician fell 18 meters down while installing the lighting system. He died in the hospital.
- For several years now, every edition of the festival has been based on a new motto:
- 2014: The world of the Maya
- 2015: Ancient Rome
- 2016: A trip to Asia
- 2017: A trip to the USA
- 2018: A trip to the UK
- 2019: A trip to India
- 2021: A trip to Italy
- In 2016, Nicky Romero canceled his appearance at short notice. Reasons were not given, Laidback Luke was spontaneously signed as a replacement .
- In 2017, Alison Wonderland canceled her appearance at short notice. Reasons were not given, Brohug was spontaneously signed as a replacement.
- In 2018 there were power failures on several stages shortly after midnight, which interrupted Armin van Buuren and Atmozfear's appearances and EDX's appearance was canceled.
- In 2019, Yellow Claw's appearance was canceled in advance, and there was no official statement from the management or the organizer. As a replacement, Netsky, Jauz and Slushii were hired for a B2B set. A few days before the festival, Afrojack canceled his performance due to personal reasons, and Don Diablo stepped in as a replacement . Due to a delay, Quintino could not appear on his set, which is why Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman took over his playing time. Even Steve Aoki could not occur for family reasons, after which the following acts have been brought forward. The Chainsmokers were late, which is why the entire timetable was postponed and Steve Angello came on stage for a B2B set with Sebastian Ingrosso .
- In 2019 a thunderstorm threatened to hit the site, which is why a large-scale evacuation of the site was planned. The all-clear was given at the last minute.
Discography
Together with Ronny Bibow, the German producer Michael Bein, who appeared almost every year as Money G on the main stage from the first edition until 2014, founded the “Airbeat One Project” in 2004. In the years that followed, a number of songs in the field of progressive trance appeared under this pseudonym. In 2012, the project was taken up again by Bein alone and a few more singles appeared by 2013, but these could be classified much more in the areas of hands-up and electro-house . In 2015, a compilation was published for the first time , comprising a total of 40 songs by different performers. From 2015 to 2017, the official anthem was produced by German producer Andrew Bennett. The following year the German musician Luca River alias Fluex took over this job.
Aftermovies of the festival have been published annually since 2009. While the length of the first aftermovies was just under 6 minutes and the following year only offered 4 minutes of video material, the aftermovies from 2015 and 2016 are over 10 minutes long.
