Villány [ vilːaːɲ ] (German Wieland , Croatian Vilanj , Serbian Вилањ ) is a small town in County Baranya in Southern Hungary . The Villány Mountains and a well-known wine-growing region on the seven hills are named after her.
history
The "city of grapes and wines " is a railway junction and offers numerous sights. It is still inhabited today by Danube Swabians who were settled there by Maria Theresa after the Turkish wars . They brought new grape varieties to Hungary (e.g. Blauer Portugieser ) and made some prosperity.
In 1946, after the Second World War , many Germans were expelled from Hungary. Unlike in the Sudetenland or Yugoslavia , this mostly happened without the use of force. Many monuments in the area remind of this time.
Villány and many other towns and cities in the settlement areas of the Danube Swabians now have bilingual place-name signs, some also trilingual (in addition Croatian or Serbian ).
The wine from Villány and the surrounding area has also gained a good reputation outside of Hungary. But Budapest wine connoisseurs in particular are prepared to pay the highest prices for wines from the top wineries in Villány. There are countless wine cellars on the Villány-Siklós wine route. In contrast to the neighboring white wine town of Siklós , Villány is famous for its red wines, which have earned the place the nickname "Bordeaux of the East".
In the vicinity of the village, in the south-western part of the district, on the conical mountain Szársomlyó, there is a sculpture park that was created by a sculptor symposium Villány in 1968.
Town twinning
Villany maintains a town twinning with the German municipality of Eislingen / Fils in the east of Baden-Württemberg, not far from the state capital Stuttgart. It has existed since the mid-1980s and was one of the first partnerships between a Baden-Württemberg city in Hungary.
