Gertrud Irmgard Magdalena Wagner (born June 26, 1925 in Graz ; † October 25, 2009 there ) was an international chess referee and played a major role in international chess. From 1986 to 1998 she was President of Zone 2 of the International Chess Federation ( FIDE ). Zone 2 of FIDE was formed at the FIDE Congress during the 1986 Chess Olympiad in Dubai from Germany , Liechtenstein , Austria , Switzerland and, for political reasons, also from Israel . H. Israel was assigned to Central Europe.

Life

Gertrud Wagner was born as Gertrud Irmgard Magdalena Stein on June 26, 1925 in Graz. The parents were Ferdinand Josef and Anna Stein. After school she trained as a salesperson at the Palmers company . During the war she was drafted into the employment office in Graz. On April 23, 1949, she married Karl Wagner (* January 7, 1923 in Graz; † March 6, 1993 in Graz). Their son Peter was born on September 8, 1956 and their daughter Elisabeth on March 3, 1958. Gertrud Wagner died on October 25, 2009 in Graz.

She did not learn to play chess until 1947, but became Austrian national champion in 1951 . The tournament was held in Vienna from June 11th to 15th. In the following years Gertrud Wagner (affectionately known as Gertrude or Gerti) went on several tours with the Arland chess club.

After several years of voluntary work at the Styrian regional association, she was elected national game director of the Austrian Chess Federation in 1971 . A steep ascent began. As early as 1972 she won the title of "International Referee" of the World Chess Federation. This made her and her husband Karl the only married couple in the world with this name.

Great knowledge and confident behavior as a referee were the basis of her success. In 1975 she became famous as a referee at the Pula Chess Festival ( Yugoslavia ) - with 280 teams from 8 nations. In 1976 she was also a referee at the international grandmaster tournament in Kapfenberg .

Together with her husband Karl, she founded the Mitropacup in 1976 , which she ran herself for years.

Gertrud Wagner headed the women's zone tournament in Tel Aviv in 1979, the zone tournament in Graz in 1993 and the women's zone tournament at the same location, and in 1979 the women's interzonal tournament in Rio de Janeiro . The referees at the 1979 men's interzonal tournament in Rio were Harry Golombek and Gertrude Wagner.

In 1980 it was as a referee at the quarter-final match of the candidates tournament for the World Cup 1981 between Viktor Korchnoi and Tigran Petrosian in Velden used. Gertrude Wagner was a referee at the Chess Olympiads in Malta in 1980 , in Lucerne in 1982 , in Thessaloniki in 1984 , in Dubai in 1986 , in Novi Sad in 1990 and in Moscow in 1994 . In 1998 she headed the Senior World Championship in Grieskirchen .

Gertrude Wagner was a member of the FIDE rules committee from 1978.
In 1982 she was appointed to the qualification committee of the World Chess Federation.

Gertrud-Wagner-Allee in Graz was named after her posthumously in 2013.
