At the 1984 women's chess world championship , Georgian Maia Chiburdanidze successfully defended her title against Irina Levitina .

Interzonal tournaments

At the interzonal tournaments in 1982, 15 and 16 players, respectively, who had previously qualified in zone tournaments on a regional scale, competed. From each of these tournaments three players qualified for the candidates tournament.

Candidates tournament

The candidates tournament was played again with eight players in the knockout system. In addition to the six qualifiers from the interzonal tournaments, the two players who had contested the candidate final in 1981 were added.

World championship fight

The world championship match was held from September 10 to October 25, 1984 in Volgograd . Main judge was Jaroslav Šajtar from Czechoslovakia . Maia Chiburdanidze won safely and remained world champion for another two years. As the defending champion, 8 points would have been enough for her, but after reaching the eighth point, the game was continued as long as the challenger could achieve a draw.
