2017 Women's World Chess Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2017 women's chess world championship was held from February 10 to March 5, 2017 in the Iranian capital Tehran in the Hotel Espinas Palace as a knockout tournament with 64 participants. The tournament should originally have been held in October 2016, but was postponed by FIDE to 2017 because no host could be found. In September 2016, FIDE announced that the hosting rights had been awarded to the sole applicant Iran.

Tan Zhongyi from China became the new world champion with a victory of 3½: 2½ points in the final over Anna Musytschuk .

Several players who were actually eligible to participate did not take part, including the reigning world champion Hou Yifan and her predecessor Marija Musytschuk .

Non-participating players

Boycott over the venue

After the venue became known, the reigning US champion, Nazi Paikidze , who was actually eligible to participate , protested against this decision and announced that she did not want to take part in the World Cup. She justified this, among other things, with the obligation for women in Iran to wear a headscarf in public. The 2014 world champion, Marija Musychuk, joined this boycott. Several other players have also expressed their discomfort but want to participate, including Elisabeth Pähtz .

The multiple US champion Irina Krush justified her rejection with a travel warning for women to Iran from the US State Department.

Other reasons

The reigning world champion Hou Yifan had previously announced that she no longer wanted to participate in the world championship cycle. She justified this with her dissatisfaction with the mode of competition.

The current fourth in the world rankings, Humpy Koneru , has canceled her participation without giving any reason.

The Romanian Cristina-Adela Foişor succumbed to cancer three weeks before the start of the tournament, her starting place was then vacant. She was thought of with a minute's silence before the start of the first round, her first-round opponent continued without a fight.

Participants

The start authorizations were assigned on the basis of various criteria, the following list is divided accordingly.

Semi-finalists of the last knockout world championship in 2014

The U-20 world champions from 2014 and 2015

The six best placed in the world rankings (average rating February 2015 to January 2016)

Actually only five players were planned, Anna Uschenina has moved up for Marija Musytschuk.

51 players from continental and zone championships

Europe

Cristina-Adela Foișor , who qualified based on her results at the 2014 European Women's Championship, passed away on January 21, 2017. According to the FIDE regulations, no player moves up because the pairings have already been determined.

Competition mode

The tournament was played in six rounds, with two players playing two games against each other in rounds 1-5. The time control was 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the rest of the game with a time credit of 30 seconds per move from move 1. Should a match end in a tie, two games of rapid chess over 25 minutes plus 10 seconds time credit were given per move (25/10). If the match was still tied, two rapid chess games (10/10) followed, if these did not result in a decision either, the match was extended by two games of blitz chess (5/3). In the event that the match is still not decided, an "Armageddon" game decided. Here the winner of the drawing of lots chose whether she wanted to play with white or black; White was given 5 minutes to think about it, Black 4 minutes, and from move 61 onwards there was 3 seconds time credit per move. In the event of a tie, the black player of that game won the match.

Four long games were played in the sixth round. The winner was whoever achieved 2.5 points first. The rules for the tie-break were the same as for the first five rounds.

The main judge of the tournament was Anastasia Sorokina from Australia .

course

Due to Iranian laws, which are based on the commandments of the predominant religion in Iran, Islam , all players wore hair covering . During the tournament, photos of all the players were posted in the gaming room, on which they also wore such clothing.

During the first round there were problems with the ventilation system, which made the air in the tournament hall warm and stuffy.
