World Women's Chess Championship 1956

For the women's chess world championship in 1956 , a candidates tournament with 20 participants was initially held. Then the tournament winner, the current and the previous world champion determined the new title holder.

World Championship

The world championship took place in Moscow from August 21 to September 25, 1956. The main referee was Fritz Andersson ( Sweden ), supported by Wera Tichomirowa ( Soviet Union ). In addition to the winner of the candidates' tournament and the defending champion, the previous world champion was also invited. The three players completed a tournament in which each participant played eight games against each of the others. The following table shows the results of these individual comparisons.
