Milunka Lazarević's father and brother were avid chess players, and she started playing chess at the age of 14. She represented her country on the first board at six women's chess Olympiads . In 1963 she won the silver medal in Split with Yugoslavia, only half a point behind the Soviet Union. The subsequent playoff for a place in the World Cup final against Nona Gaprindashvili finished second behind Alla Kuschnir. In 1976 she became the Grand Master of Women .
Milunka Lazarević was also an internationally recognized chess journalist, international referee and chess official. In particular, she campaigned for the promotion of women's chess in the world association FIDE .
