Candidates tournament of women Kazan 2019

The Candidates Tournament of Women Kazan 2019 served to determine the challenger of world chess champion Ju Wenjun from China. The tournament took place in Kazan from May 29th to June 19th . With this tournament, FIDE reverted to a mode last used before the 1999 World Women's Chess Championship .

Participants and Modus

The eight participating players each played two games against each other. The tournament winner acquired the right to participate in the 2020 women's world chess championship . Among the participants were the three semi-finalists of the last World Cup (with the exception of the world champion) and another five players based on their position in the FIDE world rankings, with the average of all monthly lists for 2018 being assessed. Former world champion Hou Yifan decided not to participate.

Tournament course

The superior player was the Russian Alexandra Gorjatschkina , who initially only started as a replacement for Hou Yifan. Gorjatschkina was already the sole tournament winner two rounds before the end and suffered her only defeat in the last round.
