Candidates tournament

In contrast to the five previous World Cup cycles, the Candidates Tournament was once again held as a round-robin tournament, with each player having to compete twice against each other. In addition to the six players from the interzonal tournaments, there were two finalists from the previous candidate tournament. Jelena Achmilowskaja prevailed, although she was defeated in the direct duels against the runners-up. Litinskaya, who was leading with 6 points from 7 rounds after the first round, only got two points in the second half. The tournament took place in Malmö in February 1986 .
