2018 Women's World Chess Championship (knockout tournament)
From November 2 to 23, 2018 , the second women's world chess championship of this year was played in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia , a knockout tournament with 64 players. It followed the 2018 Women's Chess Championship in May, which was held as a duel . The world champion Ju Wenjun determined there received no special rights for this second World Cup. The main judge was Igor Bolotinski from Russia.
Ju Wenjun won the final in the tiebreaker against Jekaterina Lagno and thus kept her world title, which she tried to defend in the 2020 women's chess world championship .

The reigning world champion Ju Wenjun , who was seeded number 1 , reached the final against Jekaterina Lagno , the current number 4 in the world rankings , without a tie break .

After an opening draw , Ju lost with the black pieces a rook runner endgame with bishops of different colors. Ju saw the third game with two extra pawns in a draw final. In the fourth game, Lagno was outplayed by her opponent and had to admit defeat shortly before the mate , so that it came to a tiebreak. The two 25-minute games (with an allowance of 10 seconds per move) ended in a draw. Ju Wenjun was able to win both 10-minute games (also with an allowance of 10 seconds per move) and thus defend her title.
