World Women's Chess Championship 1958

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1958 women's world chess championship in Moscow was the rematch for the title of world chess champion between world champion Olga Rubzowa and former world champion Jelisaveta Bykowa .

In 1958, the Women's World Championship was held from February 2 to March 14 at the Central Chess Club of the USSR in Moscow. The main referee was Eino Heilimo (Finland), supported by Tamara Strandstrem (Soviet Union). After Bykowa had lost the title to Rubzowa in the three-way battle for the women's world chess championship in 1956 , she was entitled to a rematch duel. She won with 8.5 to 5.5 points and became the first woman to become world champion again after losing the title. FIDE therefore lists her as the third and fifth world chess champion.

As a result, Bykowa defended the title again in 1959 , but lost it in 1962 to Nona Gaprindashvili , who would keep the title for 16 years.
