Interzonal tournaments

At the interzonal tournaments in 1987, 16 and 18 players, respectively, who had previously qualified in zone tournaments on a regional scale, competed. From each of these tournaments three players qualified for the candidates tournament.

Candidates tournament

The Candidates Tournament was again played as a round-robin tournament, with each player twice against each other. In addition to the six players from the interzonal tournaments, there were two finalists from the previous candidate tournament. The tournament took place in January 1988 in Zqaltubo . Again Litinskaja played a strong first round (unbeaten with 5½ points from 7 rounds), but fell clearly from the second half of the season as in 1986 (four defeats). While Achmylowskaja played evenly, Iosseliani only gave a single draw in the second round.

Playoff

The subsequent playoff between the two winners with equal points was scheduled for six games. A 3: 3 draw should be enough for Iosseliani, as she had the better Sonneborn-Berger rating in the main tournament. After their opening win and four draws, the competition could be ended after five games.
