1996 Women's World Chess Championship
At the 1996 women's world chess championship, defending champion Xie Jun was defeated by the new world champion Zsuzsa Polgár from Hungary.
Interzonal tournament
At the 1993 interzonal tournament, 39 players competed who had previously qualified in regional tournaments.
Candidates tournament
The candidates tournament was played as a round-robin tournament, with each player twice against each other. It took place from September 10th to 30th, 1994 in Tilburg . In addition to the seven players from the interzonal tournament, there were two finalists from the previous candidates' tournament. Places 1 and 2 in this candidate tournament entitle them to participate in the subsequent candidate finals.

Candidate Finals
The candidate final took place in St. Petersburg in March 1995 . Zsuzsa Polgar clearly prevailed and qualified as a challenger to the current world champion.

World championship fight
The world championship match was held in January and February 1996 in Jaén . Zsuzsa Polgár won clearly and replaced the previous world champion Xie Jun.
