1972 Women's World Chess Championship

At the 1972 women's chess world championship , Georgian world champion Nona Gaprindashvili successfully defended her title. For the third time in a row she met Alla Kuschnir in the World Cup match .

Interzonal tournament

For the first time, an interzonal tournament was held in the run-up to the World Cup . Eighteen players who had qualified through regional zone tournaments worldwide took part. The tournament took place in May 1971 in Ohrid . The players in places 1 to 3 qualified for the first time in the KO mode the candidates tournament.

Candidates tournament

The candidates tournament was played in the form of matches over a maximum of 10 games. The first three of the interzonal tournament as well as Alla Kuschnir, who lost in the previous World Championship fight, were eligible to participate .

World championship fight

The world championship match was held from May 10 to June 26, 1972 in Riga . The main referee was Vladas Mikėnas , supported by Tamara Strandstrem (both from the Soviet Union).
