The 1965 World Chess Championship for women was the duel between defending champion Nona Gaprindashvili and her challenger Alla Kuschnir, which took place in Riga from September 18 to October 23, 1965 for the title of world chess champion .

Candidates tournament

To determine the challenger, the candidate tournament with 18 participants took place in Sukhumi in September and October 1964 . Since there were three players tied at the top, a playoff was then necessary.

Playoff

To determine the challenger, a playoff was required, which took place in Moscow in December 1964 . The three participants each played two games against each other.

World championship fight

The duel between world champion Nona Gaprindashvili and Alla Kuschnir began in Riga on September 18, 1965. Nina Hrušková-Bělská from Czechoslovakia acted as the main referee . After Black's victory in the first game, Kuschnir also equalized with the black pieces. A draw in the third game was followed by two wins for the world champion. With another draw and two subsequent wins, Gaprindashvili extended the lead and, despite Kuschnir's vehement resistance, finally brought her lead to bear, so that she won with 8.5 to 4.5 points. The competition ended on October 23, 1965. It is worth mentioning the high number of wins with the black stones .
