At the 1993 Women's World Chess Championship , the Chinese Xie Jun successfully defended her title against Nana Iosseliani .

Interzonal tournament

At the 1991 interzonal tournament, 35 players competed who had previously qualified in regional tournaments.

Candidates tournament

The candidates tournament was played as a round-robin tournament, with each player twice against each other. The six players from the interzonal tournament were joined by Maia Chiburdanidze, who lost the previous World Cup match, and Alisa Marić, who came second in the Candidates' tournament at the time. The Hungarian player Zsuzsa Polgár was also invited by FIDE . Shortly before, she was the third player to ever receive the general grandmaster title . The tournament took place in Shanghai in October and November 1992 . Places 1 and 2 in this candidate tournament entitle them to participate in the subsequent candidate finals.

Candidate Finals

The candidate final took place in Monaco in February 1993 . It ended in a draw both after the originally planned eight games and after two extra two games. Finally, a drawing of lots was brought about through which Nana Iosseliani entered a world championship fight as a challenger for the second time.

World championship fight

The world championship match was held in Monaco in October and November 1993 . Defending champion Xie Jun prevailed very clearly and remained world champion.
