Mar Gewargis III. ( Arabic كوركيس الثالث صليوا, Syrian ܡܪܝ ܓܝܘܪܓܝܣ ܬܠܝܬܝܐ; born as Warda Daniel Sliwa , Arabic وردة دانيال صليوا, Syrian ܘܪܕܐ ܕܢܝܐܝܠ ܨܠܝܒܐ; * November 23, 1941 in al-Habbaniyya , Iraq ) is an Iraqi Christian priest and since 2015 Catholicos - Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East .
Life
Warda Daniel Sliwa was born on November 23, 1941 in al-Habbaniyya, Iraq, to Daniel and Mariam Sliwa. In 1964 he began studying at the College of Education, which was attached to the University of Baghdad . He then taught English in various schools in Iraq for thirteen years.
During a visit to the United States of America , the Assyrian Catholicos Patriarch Mar Dinkha IV called him to serve as a clergyman in the Assyrian Church of the East . After receiving priestly training from the Church, he was called a deacon on April 13, 1980 and ordained a priest on June 8, 1980. Warda Daniel Sliwa had teaching duties within the Church until he was called by Mar Dinkha IV to be metropolitan for Baghdad and all of Iraq. He succeeded Metropolitan Mar Yosip Khnanisho, who died in 1977 . On Pentecost Sunday, June 7, 1981, Warda Daniel Sliwa was introduced to his office as Metropolitan of Baghdad and All Iraq by Dinkha IV in the presence of Mar Aprim Khamis in the George Cathedral of Chicago, taking the name Mar Gewargis III. received.
During his tenure as Metropolitan of Baghdad, Gewargis built an archiepiscopal seminary in the city, from which numerous priests and deacons in Iraq emerged. In 1994 he went to Russia to build up some parishes for the Assyrians living here. He appointed a new pastor for the Assyrian Church of St. Mary, which was newly built in Moscow at that time and consecrated by him. As a result, the number of Assyrian priests and deacons increased. In 1998 Gewargis III traveled. to China to rebuild some very old churches here. He also went to Turkey to the historic heartland of the Assyrians around the cities of Mardin and Hakkâri . Gewargis opened a church library with numerous ancient writings in his bishopric in Baghdad. He also set up a press and press office that published a number of Assyrian ecclesiastical books for Church use around the world. In 2009 the Urhai Baghdad private elementary school was opened under his position.
From September 16 to 18, 2015, the Council of Prelates of the Assyrian Church of the East met in a Holy Synod in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Ankawa near Erbil . On September 18, 2015 Warda Daniel Sliwa was elected 121st Catholicos Patriarch of Seleukia-Ctesiphon by the Holy Synod to become Mar Gewargis III. Khanania to succeed the late Mar Dinkha IV . On September 27, 2015, he was ordained under the presidency of Mar Aprem Mooken , the Metropolitan of Malabar and India, and Mar Meelis Zaia , the Metropolitan of Australia, New Zealand and Lebanon, and became a Catholicos Patriarch with the spiritual name Mar Gewargis III. enthroned.
In February 2020 Gewargis III announced. to resign from his office for health reasons. A Holy Synod in Ankawa was scheduled for 2020.
